First Bollywood Experience - Question For Westerners

What was your first Bollywood experience, ( Slumdog Millionaire doesn't count, it's actually a british film)? Something that piqued your interest or made you go "wow"? For me, it was the opening sequence in the film Ghost World. I saw it on the big screen, when the movie first came out. I was so blown away by it, that as soon as I got home, I started doing research on what it was I had just seen. I found it, and what follows is a link to a video clip of that scene. It's from a Bollywood film made in the early 60's called Gumnaan, with Mohammad Rafi performing "Jaan Pehechaan Ho". Simply one of the best music videos. Ever. WOW!! Enjoy.

I'm not responding to your content. I'm correcting your usage. "Peeked" is wrong. So is "peaked." The correct word is "piqued."

Thanks professor. I digress though. You peeked, was piqued, put in your two cents, (I wish I could end this with peaked, but I can't, so I won't).

I live in the US, midwest. MNIK was my first. Since I inadvertently wandered into MNIK at the multiplex in Feb. of '10, I've seen about 20 Indian films and watched 30 or 40 "making of [a film]" videos and interview videos on youtube. I agree: "wow"!

The critics are too harsh on Indian films, both in India and in the US, in my opinion. So many films are quite good but fail at India's box office, too. Not sure why. Maybe my tastes are odd; I liked Raavan, for example.

I totally enjoy the Indian cinema board here on imdb, too. I comment every once in awhile but am an outsider so use restraint. Anyway, great fun!

When my husband and I were first dating, he took me to an Indian cinema in Melbourne to see Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. It's certainly not my favourite Bollywood film, but it was ok. I've seen much better films since.

My first was either "Monsoon Wedding" or "Lagaan," both of which I enjoyed immensely. Recently I saw "Om Shanti Om" which was totally ridiculous but a lot of fun. My favorite Bollywood movie so far has been "3 Idiots."

Well, both Slumdog and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel piqued my interest, but it never went on from there. It wasn't till I was watching Danny Boyle's Inside Man, which opens with the utterly fantastic song Chaiyya Chaiyya played over the credits, that I got interested. I went directly to YouTube to hear the song again, and watched the original sequence from Dil Se.. Then I went directly to Amazon and ordered Dil Se..

I live in Atlanta, Georgia. Dhoom 2 was my first Bollywood film. It wasn't very good but it's good that I didn't stop there. I've seen many since then. And I think my favorites are Om Shanti Om, Chak De India and Dil Bol Hadippa. I love anything with Rani Mukerji in it.

20 year old male from the UK, I'm doing film studies at university and in our module for international cinema one of the weeks was Bollywood in which we studied Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). We're only screened an hour of the film so I looked it up and noticed it was over 3 hours long, so a week before the lecture I watched the film and I loved it so much that I watched it two additional times before the lecture. That really got me exploring Bollywood/Indian cinema and this was two years ago (I was 18).
