To be honest I'm just as confused, I couldn't belive it when I saw the ending credits. And that is because I've read the book 2 years ago, and that is definitely not the ending. Jose is naratting the story and she is remembering her college days with Marcos and Jaime. After that their 'friendship' falls apart, Marcos becomes a famous painter and years later he commits suicide. If I remember well it's Jaime who tells Jose about this and they see each other one more time - for going to the funeral or something like that.
I realise this may not be very useful, but the point is, they do indeed stop seeing each other, so I guess that's really the end of the story, at least the film's version one. It's always the way it ends - films like 'The dreamers', 'Bande a parte'(Band of outsiders) or 'Jules et Jim', they all tell the same story (more or less) and have the same ending (... more or less) but they hold a certain kind of fascination and are truly remarkable films - and books, I might add.
In this case, the book, by Almudena Grandes, is certainly better. But I'm not gonna lie, I've loved the film as well.
