Having just watched the first 2 episodes I'm thinking what a dream cast Ben Whishaw, Bill Paterson, Con O'Neill, Pete Postlethwaite and David Harewood make!?!
I always wonder if a drama like this was written with particular actors in mind.
Certainly the 5 I've mentioned all fitted their parts like gloves!! :)

Although I agree with you about the first series, I have just watched the final of the second series here in Australia and maybe this cast was even better. The court room drama was so tense and the acting by the lead women was excellent.
Maxine Peake, as the woman on trial, reminds me a little of Miranda Richardson, both in looks and in her acting. Which is no mean complement, Miranda is one of my favourite actresses. Maxine's performance as the abused, confused and deeply stressed woman was very powerful, as was Sophie Okenedo has her solicitor.
