Was Ben raped by the other inmates?

Don't think so. I think they only wanted to hurt and humiliate him. Not sure what they were supposed to have poured over him to make the grass stick but it looked like his skin was raw as he was being cleaned up.

but I still have no idea what a "grass" means in prison...

Someone who informs the wardens about the misdeeds of other inmates. Someone who "grasses them up."

He was labelled a grass after telling one warden about the stolen cigarettes.
