How can 1,200 people recreate the human race?

Will not inbreeding be a problem? In a couple generations the deformed offspring will be just as *beep* up as the cannibals on the ship.

The only solution I could come up with is frozen sperm that would be used to generate genetic diversity but they would have been lost on the ship.

reply

1200 people could do it because it's happened before. For one example, about 70,000 years ago the Toba volcanic event altered the Earth's climate creating a human population bottleneck - leaving as little as 1000 breeding pairs.

In addition there were a couple other bottlenecks before that in earlier times, as well as small populations living isolated parts of the world times which have grown without any serious problems.

reply

You also have to remember that the remaining humans were most likely very different in terms of family genetics.

But after about 15-20 generations this would be meaningless.

reply

Who said anything about recreating the human race? Why are you asking that? Did you not see the movie????

THEY ARE SURVIVORS.

Originally there were 60,000.

And no, inbreeding shouldn't be a problem. Just look at all the red states in the south.

And think about the bible....

There is only Adam and Eve. Yet their sons marry women... where did the women come from? Uh... sisters. And of course the bio diversity would be blown to hell.

Hence, its a mostly fictional book with history, some fables, etc.

reply

For NeoDeMover...
If you read the Bible from actual Hebrew texts God created Adam(man)on the 6th day{1 day with God is like 1000 years with man}, on the 7th day God rested. On the 8th day God created "Ha Adam"(Hebrew translates to "The Man").
The earth was already populated "before Adam and Eve"! How else could Cain "journey to the land of Nod and take a wife"?

Because the bible is a work of fiction that has been translated and retranslated and spruced up and changed around so many times that even the original stories are so mangled as to be barely recognizable. But mostly because it's fiction, there is no god, there were no adam and eve as described in genesis, and the heavens and earth were not created in 7 days or 7,000.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

reply

I wouldn't think that inbreeding would be a problem with so many individuals.

What i do wonder is how exactly it was planned. They were supposed to take 123 years to get there. That means the original travellers would not make it but their descendants. They were only awake for 2 years at a time (or was that the crew only?) so how did they reproduce and raise the next generation in such bursts? Did they really put children into stasis? And wouldn't the raising of generations on the ship in fact make them adapt to the ship?

Or were the ones in stasis supposedly staying that way for all 123 years?

reply

That was only for the flight crew. Everyone else was supposed to stay in stasis until they landed; they were in stasis, ie. not aging, so yes the original people would have reached it and they would not have reproduced or needed to.

Except Gallo wanted to play God.

reply

Nod means nothing, Kane went to the land of nothing. This could mean two things, Kane found no home and wondered forever or he found a wasteland ware nothing grew or lived

reply

Humanity already existed before Adam. Adam was the first man created by God, but not the first man.

reply

How was Adam the first man yet not the first man and if he was the first created by God then who created the rest of them? Is there a pantheon of God out there micromanaging each part and the head God just comes in and does special parts at certain times or something?

reply

Clearly we are a Sims game. Some of us are pre-loaded NPCs. Adam and Eve were the player's first family and the sons of Adam and Eve married NPCs.

Makes as much sense as anything in the Bible.

reply

And yet stats show it’s the blue states in the north where bestiality is most prevalent.

"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

reply

There is actually one simple statistic here...
For true genetic diversity you only require 37 seperate genetic models...
Thus 1,213 people could easily recreate the human race as that is greater than 37...

reply

It would really be a bummer if turned out to be 1199 males and 1 female

Haha made you look!

Why would they need to recreate the human race? They're already the human race. They just need to make more; and they will. By screwing around.

reply

To the OP, like everyone said 1200 is more than plenty enough to start increasing the human population again. In the Matrix Reloaded the Architect told Neo to select 16 females and 7 males to repopulate Zion. So yeah 1200.

reply

Just look in nature, some of these animal populations have gotten very low and recovered pretty well. Like whooping cranes were down to about 10 breeding pairs, how they have over 100 pairs and they are doing great. California condors were down to less than that even, and now have a few hundred with no signs of genetic problems. So this would be absolutely no problem.

reply

Well seeing as how God created humans I would say that is how it would be done again.

Oooh happy days.

I've been to crappy parties like that

Yes any inbreeding would likely have led to an increase in birth defects caused by recessive genes but so long as the child survived long enough to reproduce it would be 'successful offspring'

Many of the European royalty were inbred because of marriage to family members in an attempt to keep wealth and power in the family. It didn't stop them from reproducing and thriving.

The real danger to lack of genetic diversity is the recessive gene. It can only become an active gene through the offspring of two people with the same recessive gene. Not all recessive genes are bad though or cause harm. For instance it is responsible for the variety of the many breeds of dogs.

As far as re population with only 1200 people, it's already happened in our human history. The evidence is in our mitochondrial DNA/RNA which can be used to show most of modern humanity descended from a select group of common ancestors. A real life 'Eve'.

As the population grows, random mutations over generations will again diversify the gene pool and lead to a healthy population again.

reply

They mutated on the ship because they adapted to live in poor conditions into the ship, not because inbreeding.

1200 People would create a whole humanity without any trouble.

reply

yea, but in how many years ?

reply

I hope that it take a lot of time, before the new planet suffers the same fate as the earth.

"All of this has happened before"... :)

reply

1- We dont know if they succeed. All we know is tha 1213 people just survived.

2- They were genetically altered to better adapt themselves to a new planet - why not also be modify to better reproduce?

3- Some time ago I read in a science article (not the IMDb boards) that it took about 6000 humans to reproduce the race without the risks of inbreeding. So with 1200 people it should be hard but not really impossible.

4- A more valid question IMO is how they are going to survive naked and without equipment in a different planet!

"That was a courtesy flush. I'm not actually done yet"

reply

1- They have survived on that crazy ship for almost a millennium, so it should be a piece of cake for them now.
2- The genetic alteration involved giving them higher mutation rates to boost variability (via disabling DNA damage repair?). Next natural selection would have a large pool of variation to choose the fittest from.
3- They were chosen with that in mind, so their genetic variability would be higher than in a random population sample.
4- see 1 above

reply

Pretty cool too that now humans can consciously direct their evolution. So the survival rates here would be even higher.

reply

The ship could also have artificial wombs or breeding chambers. This is the far future, after all.

reply

Movie never gave any assumption that human race would survive. It was just a *beep* ending of a story. That's it. Grow up -91.

reply

It was suppose to be trilogy, but the first didnt do so well in box office. Well the human race didnt start with 100,000 or 1 million, so 1,200 should be more than enough to continue it and increase the population say over 5 generations.

reply

Why would inbreeding be a problem with 1,200 people!?

reply

As was said already there have been population bottlenecks in the past, one brought people down to 1000 or so people, don’t know enough about genetics to comment but seems in reality people have bounced back from smaller numbers. This was done with out genetic shenanigans that took place here. Also I remember from school that earths population quadrupled something like every 50 - 100 years (not really certain know it was an alarming rate). So sure it would only take like 1000 years for them to muck that planet up as well.

As for the God people well your nutty, and you shouldn’t be allowed to use the internet.

Also to the political people who idolize and defend these people like religious zealots your nutty and shouldn’t be allowed to use the internet, and not being able to be part of one political party or the other and not see how nutty and corrupt, lets be conservative and say 90% of the people involved in politics (even/especially the ones in your chosen party), are makes you an obvious part of a horse.

Also agree Palin is a maroon and is not even involved in American government anymore, other then her opinion some how mattering, she’s just another TV personality i.e. Snooki; Springer or Trump.

reply

Inbreeding, genetically, is only an issue within the first 2 generations.

Such as, a mother and a father have two children, those two children have two more children and those children have their own children and then they get together.

So it would be like two great grandchildren getting together. There would be risk of genetic defect in the fetus but it would be minimal.

So as weird as it may sound, if you meet a nice girl and then you find out you share the same great grand parents, it's not that big a deal.

You can also look at it like this:

2 families
4 families
8 families
16 families
32 families

That's only 64 people and already you can offset inbreeding for 5 generations.

Those foolish enough to move from canada to america increase the average I.Q. of both countries
