It's half-English, half-Hindi? ??? What's the language? Do Indians speak like that in real life?
Could somebody explain to me about the background of this movie, about this society etc. I'm used to a completely different picture of India.
The language is Hindi, but many Indians speak with lots of English words & phrases peppered throughout.

We indians have a new language evolving, its called hinglish
its some words of hindi, some of english and few of urdu...
its VERY hard for a modern educated indian to speak ONLY in pure hindi, heck its almost impossible, because so many things HAVE to said in english
mobile phones, internet, wikipedia, google, microsoft, computers, HOW can we translate it all to hindi ?
ON the flip side, (for me personally its easier to speak in pure english)
when we speak in english, some words, some local references, etc are in hindi, hard to get around that coz these local things dont HAVE a english word!
So urban population, speaks in a mixture of both, depending on education, the spoken english is either good or heavily accented...

Indians speak variety of language. English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugue etc, it depends on the region.
shareI also observed it in this movie (and in P.K.). It is not just the common English words used as in any other languages, but they also build English sentences on its own while speaking Hindu (I guess). It is more than expressing certain words. It is simply bilingualism. I wonder why they opt one another, switch suddenly without any reason. They can express the same meaning in Hindu but they are using English without any justification. It is very strange.

Unfortunately English is quickly becoming sort of a lingua franca in the Indian cities. India has over 15+ languages, each with 10 million+ speakers. Overall at least 20 other large languages and probably 1000+ dialects.
To give you my own example --- My wife and I are both ethnic Keralites(meaning Malayalam, the language spoken in the state of Kerala, is our mother tongue). But my wife having grown up outside Kerala didnt speak very good Malayalam, when we first met(she could speak Hindi, Tamil and Telugu quite fluently, and English of course). I was strictly bilingual -- Malayalam and English. So we ended up conversing initially in a mix of English and Malayalam. Over time, her Malayalam has really improved, but we continue to speak that mix at home. After our son was born we both made an attempt to speak only Malayalam at home. But that doesnt happen very easily, since we switch between the languages without even realising it. My son is now 5 and speaks only English. He understands Malayalam quite well, but will respond only in English, sadly!
We now live in Bangalore(in the state of Karnataka, where Kannada is the native language). But Bangalore is such a melting pot that I rarely need to speak Kannada. I usually manage with a smattering of Hindi, Tamil and English with the native speakers. So my son is unlikely to pick up Kannada either.
Most families in urban India are already like this. Its only going to get worse.
