Come on guys .. How come this movie is so overrated??
I mean the jokes cracked in the movie are pretty commonplace and ordinary. The storyline is not original. What's more irritating is the fact the script has been improvised idiotically .. I mean what is the thing of meeting 10years down the line? How come the girl hasn't been married in those 10 long years and how come she was to get married the same day they decided to find the whereabouts of Rancho? So many flaws in the movie man.. Extremely average I must say .. this hype is doing it I think .. No way this movie is past 6/10 in IMDB. It's just another overrated average movie.
Whether it is good, great, sh!tty, or meh, to give this movie the 8.1/8.2 is nonsense.
I just searched a few movies that everyone can say are deserving of high ratings. Martin Scorsese's, "Casino" received an overall rating of 8.2. Is this movie really as good as MARTIN SCORSESE's movie, Casino? MARTIN. SCORSESE. Come on now...
Casino is 8.2.
This movie is 8.2.
Ratings are only meaningful when they are relative to one another. If a girl scores of 8.2 in Olympic Gymnastics in 2012, and another girl scores an 8.2 in 2012, it's usually safe to say that they did about the same job. It is also safe to say, that if another girl scores 7.0, she did not perform as well as the other two.
So instead of just giving 10's, 9's, and 8's to you favorite movies, use your judgement to give an informed rating. Ex: "I feel this movie is really good. I think it was even better than "Movie X". It wasn't as good as "Movie Y' though. Since I rated "Movie X" a 5.8, and "Movie Y" a 6.7, the rating for this movie should be somewhere in between those numbers. Since I believe it was fairly close to "Movie X" in execution, and a ways away from being as good as "Movie Y", I am going to give it a 6.1." - Fabricated Person
Wow, fabricated person, way to use good judgement in your rating. If everyone were to do that, we might be able to use those ratings for something!

What happens when you think a film is better than ''movie Y'' with its 6.7 rating, but not as good as ''Movie x'' with its 5.8 rating?
That's the thing about film. It's all subjectivity. My all time favourite film has a 6.0 rating. By your logic I can never rate anything above a 6.0, because in my eyes no film will ever surpass that.
Fabricated person did not use good judgement, they picked two arbitrary movies and rated a movie using a weird system.
What were the films? Were they the same genre? The same director? How do you decide what two films you place it between when you've seen thousands of films?
Finally. As you yourself said, ratings themselves are skewed and biased, so basing your ratings off of pre-existing ratings is inherently flawed. Case in point: Pissed off Serbs totally killed Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, which was, by most non-Serbian critics' accounts, pretty damn good. In the Land of Blood & Honey currently sits at 4.3.
Extremely overrated movie....the only good thing about movie was The Message which they could not deliver.. glorifying suicides.. degrading IITians...far beyond reality....may be we people like living in denial thats why it is 8.1..yeah I think
well you seem to know what this message is so it was delivered i guess its just a difference of opinion not the fact that the rest of the world other than you lives in denial the message was delivered to a lot of people maybe not you, but many more a majority of people liked this movie thats why its an 8.1
EXTREMELY OVERRATED MOVIE.....IT DESERVES JUST 5 OUT OF 10 ONLY FOR THE MESSAGE.....THE DIRECTION IS STUPID....ACTING IS OVERDONE FROM AAMIR KHAN.....THERES FLAW IN EVERY SECOND SCENE....THE AUDIENCE HAS LOST ITS STANDARD....
It's definitely overrated. It was nothing more than an average typical crowd-pleaser film with some funny moments and many overly melodramatic moments. 6/10 is indeed more than enough. I rated it 1/10 though because Chetan Bhagat's book was the starting point for this film, and yet he is not credited for that in the opening credits. I find this attitude hard to accept.
I'm sooo glad that I wasn't alone on this. Me & My dad hated it and were thinking why people were recommending it to us as the best movie ever? It was very very over rated movie. Its a psychological control thingy, if a movie says SRK or Amir is in it, we'll think we are watching great stuff. I guarantee you, if it was some unknown character, this film would have flopped badly.
Most the jokes were unfunny, rude, offensive, certainly not a family movie. Such over rated story. there's peeing jokes every 5 minutes, what the hell is this? so many jokes were copied it pissed me off. and my family back home was saying this is the funniest movie ever and had them lafin uncontrollably. i was really disappointed by it. but there were a few scenes which were not that bad, thats about it.

make your own movie, we'll all watch it and rate it on imdb, we promise
i watched this entire movie in theatre with my family and extended family, going in with no real expectation, i thought it was going to be stupid. But i cracked up, it was funny. Salt water is a great conductor of electricity, i am an engineer and I really enjoyed it. Some of the jokes were copied, but whatever, nowadays there isn't that much originality anyway. The movie went by so fast, didn't realize 3 hours had gone by. Aamir khan is a great actor, and i do watch his films because he doesn't do too many, but when he does them, they are generally blockbuster gems. The movie made you think and reanalyze your life and ask yourself if what you were doing was making you happy, it certainly made me ask myself that. So it wasn't definitely worth the 8 bucks and 3 hours of entertainment because at the end of it all, i drove home thinking about everything I had done up until that point.
When you compare all the *beep* movies bollywood dishes out every year, this movie is definitely much better than most of them. Most people who gave it a 8 or more compared it to those movies. The movie contains positive messages such as working hard and also of hope. As with suicides, if anyone has gone to a competitive university, they would know it's not a myth. I am an engineering student at Cornell and have heard of so many cases of people taking their lives because they felt they could not they achieve enough. The jokes may not be original, but at least they did not just copy some script from a hollywood movie like a lot of the bollywood movies do. So just take it easy and enjoy.
