is it happening again? With radical muslims (like IS and Al Quaida)

threatening our scientific view on the world? They want us to live according to the quran, following only the word of god. No more separation of state and religion. The state is run by the religion.
They are threatening that islam will spread all across europe, that we actually have no other choice but to convert. What will happen then? Will all philosophy (that is not related to god), all sociology, all human science, be lost to these religious zelots (or should i say idiots)? What do you think? Is history repeating itself?

No they are outliers whose main victims are other Muslims. Information is not stored in a select few locations these days. With the internet it cannot be destroyed. The biggest danger the west is currently suffering from is corruption and so internal dissolution- which is harder to fix than some savages in the desert of Iraq and Syria.

In a sense, it is repeating itself indeed, that's the whole point of the movie (point that went over many heads, apparently). Replace pagans with Christians and Christians with Muslims, and there you are. There's one essential difference : Islam is much older that Christianity at that times, and way more dangerous because of how it works. I don't think Amenabar had that critic of Islam in mind, but what I'm doing is just developing the idea.

No, Islam began in 610 AD which is hundreds of years after Christianity was established.

You misunderstood me. I know Islam is younger than Christianity, thanks. ^^ I was saying that in Hypatia's times, Christianity was much, MUCH younger than Islam today. My way of saying that comparing what's happening today with the muslim community with the actions of Christians more than 1500 years ago, well, doesn't work. I've heard/read people saying things like "you see, every religions have their problems !" after watching Agora, and it's so moronic I had to write that comment.

Yes it is. History keeps repeating itself. It doesn't mean we don't learn from it but most of the time, I wonder if we do.

When I see Christians ranting against Islam, it's always amusing to me because they did pretty much the same back in those days and until not that long ago if you look at it. The witches trials in Salem... were not as massive as the Grand Inquisition, the Crusades or the massacres, book burning, denial of women's rights and other niceties of that time, but the sentiment was the same.

However, even though the extremists are now armed with bigger and scarier weapons, the destruction of knowledge is near impossible at this point. It would take cataclysmic events on a planetary scale to lose what was lost in Alexandria.

I think you could make that argument.
