They were right to destroy the liebary.

What good is book learning, what does it matter if the sun orbits the earth if you are going to Hell.
There is only one book worth reading, the Bible the word of God.

THE CHRISTIANS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE WARS IN THE WORLD!!

ARE YOU A CHRISTIAN??

reply

Noncesence

People have been killing each other long before Christ was born. So how do you explain that?

Religin is sometimes used as an excuse for evil men to do what is already in their hearts. Thats not the fault of true Christians

Can't tell if stupid or just religious.

reply

The terms are synonyms.

reply

There are many religious people who are educated and literate. OP is not among them.

reply

Noncesence

Yep. That, right there, is an example of why you should be reading books.

what does it matter if the sun orbits the earth if you are going to Hell

It matters because we can improve ourselves and our lives right now instead of living in fear of your hypothetical ever-after.

You do realize, of course, that some of the professors & students at the Library of Alexandria were Christians, right?

If you love Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it copy this and make your signature!

Wow! That's hilarious! Thanks for the laugh man.

What a moron, the destruction of the great library of Alexandria was one of the great tragedies of the Ancient world. Without learning, human beings are no better than apes.

reply

Well I respect your opinion but if you ever need surgery hope that your doctor actually read some other books besides Bible.

silly biblehumper....

When they burned down the library they probably burned a few bibles as well.

reply

For the 1000th time - there is zero evidence there was any library in the Serapeum when it was destroyed. None. That whole sequence in the movie is fantasy.

Maybe because the evidence was burned?

reply

Cute. We have five separate accounts of the destruction of the Serapeum, making it one of the best attested events in ancient history. None of them mention any library being destroyed. The last description of the Serapeum from the decades before its destruction mention it had contained libraries, but uses the past tense. One of the five accounts mentioned above was by Eunapius, who was a pagan philosopher and vehement anti-Christian. He spends most of his account scornfully denigrating the Christians who destroyed the temple as ignorant peasants, but says nothing about them destroying any library.

There is no evidence that any library was destroyed in Alexandria in 391 AD, however much some people want to cling to this myth.

You wield that Tim O'Neill blog as if it were as effective as Thor's hammer, but someone ought to inform you that it isn't.

reply

maybe someone should read some books so they could learn how to spell LIBRARY!

reply

That's just LAUGHABLE!!! Your ignorance is astounding. Judge not less ye be judged. That comes from the Bible. A true intellectual educates themselves on all faiths and history. How can you learn about history if you destroy books?

If you don't learn from history you're doomed to repeat it. The quote actually goes: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Go ahead and stick to just reading the Bible. Maybe you'll learn a bit of compassion and understanding as well as not judging others.

If you interrupt me again, I'll strangle you.

Actually, the "Judge not" only applies to other Christians. The bible is pretty clear that non-believers should be shunned whenever possible. This goes as far as saying that if a Christian man is married to a non-believing woman they should get divorced, (if a Christian woman is married to a non-believing man - that's OK, lol), or that Christians should get hired to work over non-believers. It's a common perception that to be Christian is to be forgiving, fair, and non-judgemental to everyone. Not quite, only to those with the same belief.

It's interesting how the movie touches on the battle between Philosophy and Theology, and how it's hard to debate idealism. This woman was stoned in 391AD. Not much headway was made until around 1750 when David Hume suggested the is-ought problem. It's kind of cool that I get to see another shift in my lifetime, (it's really not cool, but terrible; just glad I get to live the history). People today have developed an ideology as strong as religion, but with out faith.

reply

Wow, the bible pretty much says the opposite. Reading your post was an eye opening experience for me, because I have honestly never heard that point of view before.

Anyway, how I have always viewed it is:
Judge within the church, but leave the outsiders to God.

1 Corinthians 5: 9-13 (KJV)

I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

reply

The bible is general, amazing. Corinthians tends to focus inside the faith.

2 John 1:9-11 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.
