All the negativity on this board...

And all I've seen literally everywhere else is overwhelmingly positive. The reasons for those negative posts are all bullshit right wing snowflake whining, of course. There is just so much of that on this site and it's incredibly discouraging. Very reminiscent of why the IMDb boards got shut down. Sad, sad stuff. I love the purpose of these types of boards, but they are just overrun with nutjobs.

I agree. The rampant attention seeking posters work extra hard to drown out any nuanced discussion of movies, films, actors, etc.

I have seen Prey twice and rewatched Predator before watching Prey just to set the pallet.

My take away from Prey? This Predator was a 1st time Wannabe Alpha Hunter and a bit of a jerk by today's standards.

The Comanche coming of age ritual was about survival, which is why they fought so hard.

This Predator fought and used weapons so inconsistently but according to the threat he assessed.

Bears and wolves don't have projectile weapons so he chooses hand-to-claw.

This Predator used his technology and tactics to always have an advantage when facing humans.

It's pretty bad. Try reddit. There are plenty of good groups that supports good discussions. The retards and trolls from here don't have the IQ to register there. And if they do sometimes, there are plenty of mods there that shuts their stupid faces down.

reply

Yeah this site isn't really the place for adult discussions about movies. I think a lot of the accounts parroting the same nonsense are sock puppets of a few disturbed individuals

reply

There are occasional gems when you converse with real people. It's rare to find a conversation here where you totally disagree with someone else but still have good discussion but it happens lol. I'm trying to semi-branch off onto film boards though. A lot of nonsense, but just hoping with a wider net, higher chance that there's actually adult conversation.

reply

Yeah I agree that there's some good discussion to be found here. It's just difficult to find it sometimes

I don't even like woke movies, but to me a movie with a political message that happens to be left-wing is not necessarily woke. Neither is a movie like this which bends historical accuracy in order to give women, or any other group, a chance to shine

Woke movies to me are preachy, shallow, and try to be trendy. At no point in this movie does the dialogue acknowledge that Naru is a woman, so I don't think it's preachy at all

I like good art, and good art is hard to find. Most things are bad. I don't really care what an artist's political biases are as long as they can "bring it", because that's such a rare thing

But for most posters here it's not enough to make something good, it also has to align with how they think the world should be or at least not threaten the idea

reply

Unironically recommending Reddit. Yes run off back to your echo chambers as the nasty trolls at MovieChat blast your booty on the reg kek

reply

My point exactly. You would rarely meet a low life virgin like miyagido fella here on different platforms. Just give it a shot.

reply

reddit is for faggots who lock threads. threads should "never" be locked.

reply

Yeah, I can't believe someone unironically suggested Reddit as a place to discuss things?

Sure, if you're a Liberal who supports troonery, then Reddit looks like rainbows and daffodils, but normal people should be mature enough to be able to say things that doesn't turn the hivemind into censorship central.

reply

That pretty much sums it up. Reddit is a place to gather info on occasion, but it's not a place where free discussion is allowed. Moviechat may not be perfect, but it is one of very, very few places online where the free exchange of ideas is permitted. Seems weird to write that, given how the internet began, but it's the way of the world in 2022: one side has all the power, and that side opposes free speech.

"Noooooo he spoke to me, quick off to Reddit REEEEE"

bullshit right wing snowflake whining

Based on what? So everyone who doesn't like this movie for whatever reason which you are allowed to by the way is American and right wing. Well that statistically can't be true.

Comments like yours are just as bad as you want to demonise and shut down any discussion based on arbitrary labels that have no meaning anymore.

On this board by people like you consists of and in no particualr order.

I don't like her as a character = Sexist (It isn't)
Don't like race swaps = Racist (It isn't)
Don't like gender swaps = Misogynistic (It isn't)

And so on. How is that any better. You are as bad as the people you are complaining about.

Now rinse and repeat your original and call me an "ism" for disagreeing with you and we can move on.

reply

Exactly, why don't people see that? It's ok to like or not like something. Personal opinion doesn't have to be reduced to political motivations.

reply

"Based on what?"

Narrowing it down to this board alone, all the complaints about it being "woke". Posters condemned this movie before it was release for being woke because the main character was female. That's it. Nothing more. The only people that complain about female leads are Republicans. There's no disputing that.

reply

Posters condemned this movie before it was release

So what. Didn't realise there was a rule you couldn't

And you have said that everyone is a
right wing snowflake

So basically like what we like or you will called names and diminished. You are no better

reply

Your first response is to half of a sentence, leaving out the key part. Which in doing so negates your second part entirely.

reply

No it doesn't. It doesn't negate anything just because you say so.

The two quotes are yours. You wrote them did you not.

I chose the most appropriate because not every complaint is about it being woke. That is you generalising again.

Like originally said you are complaining about people that you yourself are doing the same thing.

You are trying to sit on a moral highground and be intolerant to people under the facade of being tolerant. I always find that amusing.

reply

Wow, you are dense, dude.

reply

Can't continue discussion so goes straight to insults with no context. So original.

Funny how that always happens.

All my points still stand.

reply

No, it doesn't.

reply

" The only people that complain about female leads are Republicans. There's no disputing that."

Not all the people on here are even from the US, also you have independents, left of center libs so on...its pretty easy to dispute actually.

reply

I'm a woman and have Indigenous blood and for me this film was woke and bad, and wrong. If it stuck to actual history the entire tribe would have gone up against it, not just a lone puny girl who had just a hatchet. There were trained warriors who were cut down.

I'll grant that what Dutch said in the original about why the Predator didn't go after Anna was that she was "no threat." But why was Billy killed so easily when he was perhaps the best trained and established capable of the team?

Based on Dutch's comment even Naru would have been killed given the Predator's advanced weaponry and skill. This because she was using weapons against it. If Mac, Blaine, Poncho, Dillon, and Hawkins were all killed because they held weapons, then by that cannon, Naru should be dead.

Edited to add, to think people complaining about this female-led "warrior" film is misogyny. I say to exclude them based on the notion of this "strong independent capable" girl, is misandry at it's worst.

reply

Ah... I thought this was gonna be a valiant and neutral attempt to call out online negativity, because there is a lot of that and it's too easy to get lost in it.

Instead it's negative commentary itself "If you don't like this new thing you're this [currently acceptable to hate group/label]"

So what is being said is if you don't go along with the crowd and what it likes you are [terrible label] and will be mocked.

What is this grade school? No wonder a movie that is full of brooding adolescent attitude is looked up to as something mature.

reply

When it is one group of people using their outdated beliefs as basis for their negativity, yes.

I don't understand this one here- "If you don't like this new thing you're this [currently acceptable to hate group/label]"
In the case of this movie, that would be a female lead. That's all. What is this "new thing" you're referring to?

reply

So people who have valid non political criticism don't count?

Also what do you mean you don't understand? It's gotten ridiculous at this point where every new movie/show that is criticized gets the "You don't like it because you're racist/sexist/etc" defense.

It's a low effort strawman used to avoid honest criticism. If all you want to do is shut down honest discussion then say so. Don't try to hide behind a strawman argument as if you're being virtuous.

How is it not obvious that conservatives are the acceptable group to hate? I'm not political but it's disturbing that so much mindless strawman hate gets thrown around.

reply

Man, you do have a to admit that these kind of movies get panned a lot just in the fashion OP is describing here.

You just turned this into an argument war, but he does have a point.

reply

By who? There's a lot of reviews that have valid criticisms not about politics. Sure there are trollish reviews and people who focus on "woke". I won't entertain the idea that they're the majority. There's a lot of 10* reviews that seem like people doing it out of spite against the haters.

I didn't turn anything into a war. I called out the OP for generalizing everyone who doesn't like the movie. The "if you don't like it you're anti-woke" crowd is going wild over it. It's a lot of hostility in defense of a movie that's not great. The standard for most Predator sequels is so bad people are celebrating it.

reply

This predator wasn't hunting so much as he was battling and slaughtering anything in his path; it just felt off. In the original, the predator spent most of his time stalking the humans, picking his moments, and collecting his trophies. Also, why would the predator bother collecting snake or wolf skulls? This predator easily killed a 1000lb grizzly bear and effortlessly lifted it over his head, killed countless humans. How many sports fishermen have sunfish mounted on their wall? How many big game hunters have raccoon heads on their wall?

Also, the predator in Prey was practically invincible. He was shot through the back of the head, impaled through his torso, hit with arrows and spears, even lost his arm and it seemed to only angered him. In the original, the predator was shot in the leg and he had to retreat because of it. When he used his med kit on the wound he screamed in pain so loud Dutch and his remaining group could hear it through the jungle. The original predator was not invincible, just a skilled hunter equipped with better technology.

This new predator's inability to understand how his own targeting system worked was off as well. It was silly that he either couldn't switch to manual targeting or at least know not to fire without his mask. However the predator never figures it out, even after multiple shots fired.

These are just some of the issues that I thought ruined this film.

reply

There are 2 sides to a coin.

The movie is average, but critics go absolutely crazy because it's a native girl "smashing the patriarchy". It sits higher on the tomatometer than the original Predator and just a few points under on IMBD.

Keep the movie exactly as is, but replace Naru by a guy and the same critics would call it mediocre.

reply

The reason is not right wing, whatever that is. Or the fact that it has a lead female character. It's about the movie being bad. Bad casting, direction, editing, special effects, script and the predator itself. Take the predator for example : why does the predator go melee against wolves or bears ? He is supposed to be a stalker/hunter. Just makes him look like an idiot compared to others of his species, and its just use of bad CGI for pointless scenes. Or, why does his cloaking work now in water and 250 years later he decloaks when encountering just a little puddle. Is predator technology going backwards ? Why include that pistol without a decent story of how it gets back to the predators ?

reply

Have you seen the movie??

Do you sincerely believe is a good movie and has no flaws???

reply

I'm beginning to wonder if people actually like this movie as much as it's being hyped or if some of them are praising it out of spite toward the strawman "anti-woke" crowd.

Not to say there aren't people who hate it out of spite for the other side.

It's like "You can't have an opinion unless it fits this political template of lover/hater"

reply

i guess to work that out you count the praising vs bitching posts
