I am not a follower of comic books but love the movies made from them. One thing that always confused me about Wonder Woman is her birthplace. She is Amazonian which I associate with South America. Yet every backstory I see of her island is in the Greece area.
Yeah, nowadays when somebody says "Amazon" they usually think of the river in Africa and the surrounding area. But in ancient Greek mythology, the Amazons were a matriarchal tribe of warrior women who were thought to have lived along the Thermodon River in northern Turkey.
In the comics, the Amazons retreated to an uncharted island in the Mediterranean long ago, and have been living there in secret ever since.
The Amazon's were strongly rooted in Greek and Roman Mythology, the location of Paradise Island has been typically the Mediterranean, but in some stories (the TV show in particular), the Bermuda Triangle.
