Would the police not know about the JtR-murders?

I absolutely loved the series (well, the paranormal aspects of series 4 were a bit weird, I admit, but apart from that great series), but there was one thing that always bothered me. In the first series, where someone recreates the murder scenes of Jack the Ripper, none of the dedectives realize that this is a recreation and it takes an outsider to point that fact out. I would assume anyone working in the Whitechapel area is familiar with the facts of the Jack the Ripper case.
Also weird: Once the ripperologist has pointed out the similarities, DS Miles says "every time there is a stabbing in Whitechapel they come crawling out". So they are aware of the Ripper murders, but not of the similarities in this case.
Apart from that little nit-picking details great show. Too bad it was cancelled.

I think Miles brought it up very early on when Chandler suggested it was a Ripper Copycat - Miles said something along the lines of everytime there is a murder in Whitechapel people assume its a Ripper copycat - it was only when more murders happened in eerily similar ways to the original Ripper murders that they started to beleive this might be genuine.

So its not that they had never heard about them - its that they heard TOO much about them and they were sick of everything linking to them.

No power in the verse can stop me
