Kent

I've been wondering since Series 1 if DC Kent, the young chap, has a secret crush on Chandler, his boss. Yeah, it's prolly just me.

reply

It does look that way.

Yes, sometimes it seemed as if Kent was making puppy dog goo-goo eyes at Chandler. But then I was wondering if it's just hero worship.

I think it started out supposed to be hero worship, because in the beginning they made a point of showing him getting really into dressing up like the new DI. But then maybe the writers latched onto that semi-running joke that the DCs kind of think DI Chandler might be gay (but they're fine with it) and now Kent seems to act a bit like he hopes that might be the case sometimes.

It doesn't really help that he kind of stares longingly at him sometimes, like he's hoping for some attention. And also, that he seems to realllly not like any female love interests that show up.

He definitely does. He gets majorly jealous whenever Chandler's interested in any women.

Yes, I think Kent has a crush on Chandler. The way he looks at him.. NO WAY is that just "hero worship" or a guy looking up to another guy.. Kent looks at Chandler with love in his eyes, like he WANTS him.. it's a mix of lust/love. No way in hell is that just platonic. It may be a one way street, it looks like it's mostly Kent having a crush on Chandler, and not the other way around, but still.. I definitely think he has a crush on his boss! It's not imagination either.. many people have seen the same thing. There's lots of fan made music videos on YT for example. It's definitely real. I don't know if it's the actor playing it that way on purpose, or if he's meant to have a crush on him, or if it's just hero worship that comes across as something else, but still.. even one episode in season 3 had him looking jealous when Chandler was with another woman, and he even looked hurt when Chandler asked him to look after Miles instead of going with him. Damn.. he looked so hurt. I felt so bad for him! He obviously has feelings for Chandler. It's pretty obvious.

I just watched eight episodes of Whitechapel tonight. First time watching them and even I thought that something was up with Kent towards Chandler and like alot of the responses here I was wondering hero worship or attraction. It seems that maybe the writers want people to question this.

I am only on the second episode of Series Three and see Chandler was going to go on a date with Lizzie. Not sure if he is going to do anything with any women throughout the series but if he doesn't do anything with the women, maybe this is simply to tease the fans.

I've been thinking about this. At this point, I think it is hero worship and that Kent is naturally like Chandler in a lot of ways, so he sees him as a kindred spirit and wants to bond. (Probably like Miles and Chandler have bonded, because they work together more closely.)

I don't think he's meant to be gay and crushing on Chandler, though it's hard to see how it's not deliberately ambiguous in some scenes, since it seems to cross everyone's mind while they're watching! lol

Regardless of which it is, I really like Kent's character.

I'm hoping they will pick up season 4 right after the events of the last episode of season 3. There really did seem to be something off about Morgan. Her comment to Kent when he apologized, especially, was just.... bizarre. (But then, she was really wrong about someone else, too - obviously. lol) Also, I want to see how everyone interacts with Chandler after what happened, and I'm a bit pleased for them that they finally have a killer in custody who's still alive, so I hope they don't skip ahead in time too much when the new season starts.

I second all of your comments about what you hope for series 4, popcornlove. It will be very interesting to see how everyone behaves around Chandler after what happened with Morgan.

I also can't wait to see how the writers deal with Chandler himself coping with the Morgan events from S3. It seemed to me that when S3 ended (and in particular from the very last scene of S3), that they were hinting at a "darker" side of the Chandler character to appear next, maybe because he cracks a bit after the Morgan situation. We shall see!

reply

Yeah! And the way he brushed past Miles, who doesn't even know what happened between them. Ugh, writers torturing their characters! lol I cannot wait to see how he's behaving. Totally fallen in love with this show. :)

it did start off looking like hero worship but the more recent episodes did seem to be hinting more towards a crush, especially his slip at the very end "join me for a drink... I mean us". I think they left it deliberately ambiguous though so the audience could draw our own conclusions, or possibly so they could take it in either direction in a later storyline had the show been renewed

Agree with you, Rayvio. Too me this was all about a hero worship and role model for a young copper among rather shabby middle aged seen-it-all-before colleagues, who got a classy but eccentric new boss, maybe not more than ten years older than Kent. It was a new start for the ambitious DC, and I read it for just that. But in the final episode season 4, there was a very interesting slip of the tongue. So who knows? Maybe Kent is possessive, and wants DI Chandler for himself. Kent is an interesting character, and I had hoped that they would give us season 5.

Oh yes, the mans obsessed

I read your post when I was just starting episode one, and I've watched carefully. I really don't think he does. I think he just really admires him and wants to please him and garner more praise from him. I might be wrong, but that is the feeling I get from the first three seasons. :)

Just some food for thought,
Peace, Y'all!
