The two servants at the D'Urbervilles'

(the two girls) Did they set Tess up when she came to work there?. I got this vibe from them when Tess first set foot on the property they immediately didn't like her. Then when they were going to the dance they were all sweet to Tess in asking her to join them. When Tess wanted to go home they ignored her. i don't know why but this scene was stuck in my mind long after the film ended. Probably because i know what that's like and can relate.

I don't think they set her up. To me, it looked like they were just jealous of Tess because Alec was paying A LOT of attention to her. I guess they asked her to the dance so that they could ditch her once she got there...or maybe they asked her because they knew that if she went then Alec would go too, and they could spend time with him. Or they could have set her up prior to the dance by leaving Alec with Tess, as they might have known what happened to all the girls who were employed by the D'Urbeville household. That's my interpretation...I haven't read the book yet, haha. But there's probably quite a few possibilities.

i had thought it was because Tess was prettier than they were. i always thought that by leaving her alone with Alec, they could subltly pick on her without actually having to do anything to her themselves.
