I figured she gut hung, but then when she got on her knees I figured it was "off with the head"

would have been nice to have some clue as to what exactly her punishment was. I didn't notice the flag going up until I watched the ending a second time. The first time I just notcied a flag blowing from the top of a building, the second time I noticed it moved up. Sad

Yep, she was hung, looked it up. Plus the 98 version says in caps on the screen she was convicted and hung. The 98 version's ending was not good compared to the 2008 version's. In the 98, Tess walks away with the police and Angel looks sad but not distraught in any way that his wife is about to die. In the 2008 version Angel is distraught as she walks away with the police and then when he sees the flag go up he completely loses it. Plus in the 1998 verion Tess walks away with the police (leaving Angel for good) without a tear in her eyes. She gets away with being "subtle" in a couple scenes, but when she's like that in scenes where you expect the actress to let the motions roll based on the situations of the character, she doesn't. The 98 Tess is a little too stiff in my opinion. Angel too. They come off as people trying to play the characters of Tess and Angel, where in the 2008 version Gemma, Eddie & Hans became those characters.

Actually, I thought the relationship between Tess and Angel was far more convincing in the 1998 miniseries. Oliver Milburn is the best Angel I've seen so far. Justine Waddell was great as Tess. I like Gemma as Tess also, but Eddie's Angel was very wooden to me and uninspired. Their "romance" felt rushed and unconvinicing. I do think the ending of the 2008 version is much more tear-inducing but either way, Tess Of The D'Urbervilles is a tragedy that can reduce one to tears. I find all three films of Hardy's novel heartbreakingly beautiful and sad.
