Aspie or Asperger's... this is the question!! . . .

"Focusing on strengths requires shedding the former diagnostic term, Asperger’s Syndrome, for a new term. The authors feel that Aspie, used in self-reference by Liane Holliday Wiley in her new book, Pretending to be Normal (1999), is a term that seems right at home among it’s talent-based counterparts: soloist, genius, aspie, dancer. With fading DSM potential, the authors submit a description of “aspie” for placement in a much needed but currently non-existent Manual of Discoveries About People (MDP I) (Figure 1)."

"New ways of thinking often lead to discoveries that consequently discard their outdated predecessors. Similarly, the change from Asperger’s Syndrome to aspie holds interesting implications and opportunities. It could result in typical people rethinking their responses and rescuing a missed opportunity to take advantage of the contribution of aspie's to culture and knowledge."

I have Asperger's... and I really, REALLY don't care about the terminology. It doesn't change me personally, but if it's for the personal comfort of other people, then humans being so easily manipulated into feeling more comfortable around people by using acronyms is kinda sad.

@ TheMichael ...You hit the nail on the head perfectly and I couldn't agree more.

One of our children is an Aspie/Asperger/Aspergerer, whatever the hell people care to come up with to make themselves feel good about it.

I'm just fed-up with people pigeon-holing our child. We have a number of children, yet when people ask about them, they ALWAYS ask how the 'Aspie' is first, like they've been given a month to live!! Our children now call those people "NLWIOH" ... No Longer Welcome In Our Home!! And we concur, they're NOT!

A SHORT STORY ON OUR CHILDREN'S AMAZING BRAINSTORMING SKILLS ...

One night they were ALL unusually quiet. I went into the family room to find them all together (a rare occurrence), and asked if they were all ok. They said "Yes, in-fact we've come up with our very own acronym! Happy they were all okay, I went to leave, but as I looked back they were all staring at me. So, as tired as I was, I asked, "What is your acronym"? Talk about walking into a trap, only I didn't know I had! This is what followed ...

KIDS: Hello! Can you both come here please?
US: Yep. Okay, what's up?
KIDS: Could we all have a hug please?
US: Of course you can. What are you up to, you never all ASK for a hug?!
KIDS: We're not up to anything, we all just feel really sick.
US: What?... Why?... What's wrong?... ALL of you?! Maybe we should all go to A & E then?!
KIDS: No, we saw it on TV, we've all been diagnosed with "YSGTNT".
US: DIAGNOSED WITH WHAT?? (the penny dropped... we were being had. Even though we had NO idea what they were up to, we played along) Well, if you're all SO sick, we'll have to take you all up to A & E 'cause this sounds serious.
KIDS: No, it's okay, they say we should just rest. It's why we're all in here together. And the hug you both gave us is making us feel a lot better!
US: We're worried and what the hell is "YSGTNT"? (we were actually very intrigued by what they were up to)
KIDS: Well, after hugging us, you should both be worried because OUR acronym actually means... You Should Get Tested Now Too!!

Little bastards! But we had to hand it to them, it was genius and the point was loud and clear.

My favorite acronym, "HDWGSL" ... How Did We Get So Lucky!!

Ciao!
