I was blown away by this film - anything else out there like it?

I loved everything about it. The end was horrific but I think it sent the message home. Can anyone recommend other films similar to this? I know that might be a difficult question, because this film truly was very original and I have not seen anything like it.

I guess someone answered this question already below. My apologies.

Try Hotel Rwanda. Its the closest that comes to mind.

Now when is Barry Lyndon coming on Blu Ray?

reply

Barry Lyndon is on blu ray...

"There is no end, there is no beginning. Only the infinite passion of life. "

For a animnated film with a message, i'd say the recent persepolis is on part with this.

Slaughter House Five is similar in narrative structure, but you'd be better off reading the book.

I know these are not animated films but I got the same feeling watching these as I did watching A waltz with Bashir:

Days of heaven(1978)
The thin red line
Michael Clayton

When the Wind Blows
Barefoot Gen

I just watched this film and was moved, apalled and stunned. The look is so different from any other film, mixing incredible violence with banal talking heads, the dream dogs, the flares in the sky and the ending.
I can't think of anything like this.
The closest things I can think of are Sweet Hereafter (non-animated, but haunting) and A Scanner Darkly (animated rotoscope, cool, alienating)

Lebanon (2009) by Samuel Maoz

Although it may be a little obscure and hard to get ahold of outside of Canada, I would recommend Shake Hands With The Devil ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472562/ ), a much less Hollywoodized account of the Rwanda Genocide and the indifference of the outside world that allowed it to happen.

if you were blown away because of the animation style then i would suggest A Scanner Darkly

reply

i would like to add A Waking Life. Its not about the war but it's a dialogue driven documentary style movie and it's rotoscoped! :)

The only film that came close (as in blew me away & was as powerful) was "Grave of the Fireflies" It's animated & Japanese... but it is very good.

Just the freedom was better than breathing, they said...

"Grave of the Fireflies" belongs to a short list of the most uncompromising, honest and powerful depictions of the consequences of war ever captured on celluloid. It's not just a masterpiece of animation. It's simply a timeless work of art.

I have to watch that, I've heard nothing but good about it. I just love this movie so anything even half as good will be amazing
