Tommy Tedesco: relatively young when he died, movie confused me

He was 67. No offense to his son, but his narration at the end caused me to believe he was ancient when he died. He made it seem as if his death was long overdue or something and it was definitely his time to go.

I didn't get that impression. However, he was a big old boy (so probably somewhat out of condition) but more importantly, the work had dried up. When he had his stroke, he could blame being out of work on the stroke rather than the lack of demand - hence, it was "good timing".

I just got home from seeing it. I didn't get that impression either.

My take away was that having his work dry up left him time to do his weekend seminars, leaving him his week free to spend with his family. I found it telling that his son said it wasn't until much later in life that his father played the guitar at home for his own enjoyment - the guitar wasn't work, it was fun.

A white male born in 1950 has an average life expectancy of 69.1 years. It's about the age men die, give or take. Even with the advances in medicine this mortality rate really hasn't changed much for centuries. Thomas Jefferson died in 1826 at the age of 83. Why do the stats seem to support that we are living longer now? Averages manipulation. Infant mortality is a lot lower now than it was just 30 years ago. More babies are living which skews the average, since more live longer into old age instead of dying before they hit a year.

With medical advances we should see a huge increase in the age that men die, but the age for a guy born in 2013 is only 79.1 years - only 10 years longer than a guy born in 1950; the nuclear, smoking, heavy drinking, no seat belt age. This is still 3 years less than Jefferson.

Lots of reasons for this, (like you can't win a fight with natural selection), but the main thing to remember is to live life to its fullest every day of your life and when they want to raise the SS retirement age they really want you to find a bag of dicks at the end of the rainbow.
