5 Coins, all belonging to Americans!!

I'm all for a bit of outrageousness, movie scripts & characters that are "out-there", but the fact of the matter is, this movie has so many holes in it, I'm glad I didn't go and see it at the cinemas..

I mean, from a fountain in ITALY, she picks out coins that are not only thrown in by five males, but all of them are from where else, AMERICA!!
And whats even more ridiculous is that they all seem to live close to where she is originally from! What a load of rubbish!

This is just plain lazy from the script writers and I think they were more focussed on the size of their paychecks than actually delivering a more than acceptable storyline.

Some people on here may not blame the actors for such a ridiculous script but surely one of them would have had the foresight to see that this very section of the movie is just totally farcical...

It's a lighthearted romantic comedy. It's allowed to take liberties. I mean, you're not arguing that coins aren't magic. That's a given. You sustain belief and just go with it. Just sit back and enjoy this little gem and don't be so serious.

I think an early rating of 5.1/10 for this turkey speaks for itself, regardless if anyone takes this movie seriously or not...

reply

I thought that was weird at first too, just because a movie has fantasy elements does not mean you shouldn't incorporate some logic, but the movie ended up being so bad that was the least of it's problems.

reply

Actually, you'll find the last coin belonged to the Italian priest Father Dino. And 'Antonio'/Anthony was living in Rome and was pretending to be an Italian. So technically, you've a bit of a moot point there.

reply

True, you've got me there... But Anthony was originally from New Jersey as far as I remember so that explained his situation. But still, 4 out 5 coins belonging to Americans who all live fairly close to New York City? Why couldn't one of them have been from Madagascar or Suriname? No, that would have been too challenging or too much 'work' for them to put into the script! Like I said earlier, it was just plain laziness from the writers.. And what about all these natural disaster movies (e.g. Deep Impact) and movies where aliens look at taking over the world(e.g. Independence Day), has anyone noticed that just about all of them are based in America or at least start off there?

reply

Yeah, i agree with you there. But Americans like to base their movies on the only thing they know about, America, so i dont really hold out much hope of them evolving from this :D

reply

The aliens in Independence Day were above major cities all over the world

My couch pulls out but I don't

reply

Yeah but all the main destruction they showed was in New York, Washington and Los Angeles.

reply

I had no problem with that . . . even if you're expecting realism (which I'm not and I think it's a mistake to expect), and it's the case that (1) people from all over the world throw coins in the fountain, and (2) just as many women as men throw coins in the fountain, or "a fountain like that" (neither of which might be the case), it would be possible to pick 5 random coins and have them all belong to males who live close to New York City. It would be improbable, but improbable things can happen (and maybe do all the time). Can a film not show something improbable?

EddieDeezen's right, it can happen. And there's even a bigger plot hole than that: how does she know which coin belongs to whom? It's not like the coins were labelled. The only one she could have guessed was Nick's - because of the poker thing, and she guessed wrong anyway. Can anyone answer this? Have I missed something?

reply

Apparently it didn't occur to any of you that maybe fate had something to do with which coins she pulled out. And maybe that same mystical power told her which coin belonged to which guy. Or that their personalities told her something about which coin each man had.

reply

The magicians coin was obviously a magic coin, as I believe it folded in half. The Euro coin would most likely belong to the guy pretending to be Italian. The poker chip, yes she saw those at his apartment, though she gets that one wrong. Most younger people don't collect coins anymore, so the old American coin, most likely from the '50s or older, would belong to the oldest of her suitors. Process of elimination would leave the last coin to the male model, who was obviously so in love with himself, so how in the world did the spell affect him?

reply

Because the italians are aware how dangerous that fountain can be! They take pleasure in watching the americans make asses out of themselves though.

She was just picking the coins she'd find useful, so she picked american ones, not a big deal...

reply

Lol. not just Americans. New Yorkers.
