Why American Setting?

Why exactly did they bother making this an "American" movie when only a couple of the girls involved were American?

It made British and Irish actors force accents that they clearly were not comfortable with, it seemed weird.

Yep. Most Americans don't like to watch a movie unless they think there is an American in it. Sad but true.

reply

That is not true! We would watch anything, we are very diverse county with allot of people from everywhere. O_o

The production house went to Northern Ireland to meet with writers to see what ideas they had specifically for an American-set-but-shot-in-Ireland horror film, believing that the largest market was the American DVD market.

This was the first one that was picked up, but I believe Generator Films have a few more in the works.

reply

Good for you, as would I. However the majority of the country wouldn't unfortunately.

reply

actually, the only reason I would watch this movie is because it has Andrew-lee Potts in it, who I know it is not american. Personally, I adore accents that aren't american. Makes it exotic and interesting.

Actually, I'm American, and I watched it so I could see Katie McGrath, an Irish actress, after watching her as Morgana in BBC's Merlin.

No most Americans don't like to watch a movie with "subtitles." If I wanted to read a horror story, I'd buy a good book.

England however has produced a nice handful of horror, as has Australia. Thank god for English speaking countries.

i was pissed off when I went to watch Mad Max and it was dubbed!

They dubbed it?

Same could be said with Oliver Stone's Alexander...how were the Macedonians having obvious Irish and Scottish accents?

reply

why not?

A $hit Irish movie, filmed in the arse end of Northern Ireland with low rent English, Scottish and Irish actors pretending to be American.Did anyone honestly think 'Freakdog' was going to be anything than freaking awful? -----------------------------------------------"...and don't point your fooking tenticles at me!"

Who cares? The movie was decent nothing ground breaking or entirely new but far from awful.

The powers that be have decided to dumb down movies to account for our ADD, as well as black washing white charactors (especially in the Marvel movies: Hemdale, Kingpin, Alicia Masters, Nick Fury FU Ultimate line) because god forbid we dont satisfy the bean counters insuring we have enough black people in a film etc. American movies are in such a bad state because they are made by comitees not individuals.

I would like to go back in time and kill the idiot who created the term "reimagining."

I loved the movie, didn't notice it took place in Ireland (no offense, i just don't care where a movie is filmed unless the landscape is relevent). I also didn't notice the accents (except Andrew Lee Potts....been a fan since Primeval), but Arielle Kebbel and Sarah Carter are from the US and Canada (respectively), so it doesn't seem like there was any huge nationality bias one way or another.
My main question and reason for posting, is what was wrong with calling it "Red Mist" for the US release? Please don't tell me there's some Politically Sensitive connotation that forced the studio to change it to "Freakdog", which, to Irish Pup's point, would be my guess as to why the movie failed...No matter where it's filmed, no matter who it stars, it would take a marketing dream team to get people on board to see a movie called "Freakdog"!! WTF!

I mean seriously, does anyone know why they couldn't stick with Red Mist?
