What I liked about the Ending (Spoilers)

Whether it was intended or not, I have decided to interpret the ending this way...

Just because Doug went back home doesnt mean he gave up on her. I think by leaving the money and the luggage for her was a gesture saying, "Hey, you know I still care even though you're nobody's little girl."

The wife was right when she said, "She's not Emily." Doug knew it, and so did Allison.

But, in an odd sort of way, when Doug told the neighbor that "she has my number"...it was like parents giving their daughter the space she needs to figure stuff out on her own, but giving her the knowledge that she could come home anytime she likes.

In fact, when we see Allison in the bus station on the phone with Doug, she is dressed and groomed properly. Even though she tells Doug she is going to Vegas, a part of me wants to think that she is actually getting on the bus to "go home".

I think her call to Doug was just a way of evaluating if Doug really still wanted her in his life. She figured out that he and his wife did, so she heads towards the bus taking her Indianapolis.

Looking at the ending in this light, I liked it very much.

A few months back someone else had this same interpretation. I really liked it when I heard it. I didn't think about it at all while watching the movie so it was cool to hear this take on the ending. I think all the pieces fit and it's very possible that this may have been what happened.

Interesting comment. I have to go back and watch the ending again. I think it would have been pretty cool if the bus had a sign on it for Indianapolis. I originally assumed that she was going to Vegas though thought that was a little odd given that she was "cleaned up."

I agree. I wish the bus had a sign on it that said Indianapolis.

She wanted to see if she could make it in Vegas because its more classy and thats where the big money is. She cleaned her life up in that she stopped smoking but she didnt stop stripping because thats all she knows.

I was glad the end was not a typical happy ending. I'd like to think she called him every so often and they kept in touch, maybe a visit after a few years when she officially grew up. I don't believe she went to his hometown to live and this is the main reason she jumped out of the car that night. She loved his company and enjoyed the financial support but she did not want to become a replacement daughter.

I agree with your interpretation 100%. Well stated...

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

That's quite a lot to read into that little scene, but it did have the feel of a conversation a daughter might have with her Dad. Would've been cool if they had a shot of the departure board as she walked by it that said Indianapolis on it or some such,so i wouldn't have to strain my imagination.

That was how I interpreted the ending as well, although I didn't realise the signficance of the scene where Doug told the neighbour that Allison had his number. What you said makes total sense.

It's clear in the way she looks at the end that Allison's changed for the better because of Doug, but she's still the same girl she was before she met him. I don't think the bus was taking her to Indianapolis. I think she really was going to Vegas. Having her show up on his doorstep would have been too sudden a change, and out-of-character. I think, eventually, she'd change, because now she has someone who's there for her. But it'd be a slow transformation, because Allison's experienced too much of real life to be able to completely distance herself from it. It would take her a long time to be able to believe in the 'happy ending' kind of life Doug and Lois could offer her, and even longer to submit herself to it.

I only do it with superheroes.

Yeah; she even says she's going to keep in touch, and they say they want her to.

Born when she kissed me, died when she left me, lived whilst she loved me

That's how I saw it too. I was waiting for the camera to pan over to the bus sign showing "to Indianapolis" or something like that, but it was probably better this way.
