Spoiler: The One-Minute Brother

Spoiler:

When Peter and Emma first attempt to have sex, he appears to finish in less than a minute. This leaves a visibly disappointed Emma on the left side of the bed.

The second time they try, the scene goes immediately to the aftermath and Peter is shown asleep and Emma is on the left side of the bed looking frustrated and disappointed again.

Peter is a One-Minute Brother, literally. With such a sap for a boyfriend, Emma is obviously unsatisfied and will dump him soon.

When he says "I Love You" at the end of the movie, Emma starts crying because she knows that she'll dump him and move on when they go back to school.

So, is this movie basically telling men that if you're not performing in the sack, expect your sorry ass to be dumped or cheated on?

reply

That's really all you got out of those scenes?

Isn't that the truth, though? The girl goes for the more experienced, more 'manly' man. It's incredibly depressing, I felt immensely sorry for Peter...but the world is a vicious place and people put their own needs first. Even if somebody seems sweet and nice, like they might be the kind of person who'd love you for your personality or your heart...if you don't deliver in the sack, you are sacked.

Why does everybody just love to generalize about everything? SOME women are like Emma, some aren't, get over it please. There are actually a lot of women patient enough to keep on 'trying' and who won't dismiss a man/boy because he's not the best sexual performer.

I laughed so hard when I read this.

Actually, the reason she should dump him isn't because he can't have intercourse without ejaculating quickly, but because he doesn't turn her on. How is that any different that a guy who isn't turn on by a woman because of her looks? Also, this guy clearly didn't listen to the directions she was giving on what she likes. Women usually don't get aroused as easily as men. Women require more time and stimulation than men. He'll be a pretty lame lover if doesn't learn that.

Afraid not. She was already attracted to the brother before she slept with her boyfriend. She already knew her boyfriend was a virgin. I don't think any girl thinks that a boy's going to be great in the sack the first time out of the gate.
I just think the writer had really little to say other than he thinks all women are whores and then decided to write a screenplay that 'proves' this point by taking the story in the direction he wanted to go which is a shame because it made his story predictable and I was hoping the story would prove the theory that 'all women are whores' is not true. Didn't happen. Good performances.
Bad screenplay.

I think she's the saddest girl ever to hold a martini.

I do not agree with what you are saying.

I think Emma was in love with Caleb but didn't realize it until they had sex or perhaps when she got excited to hear his truck coming down the driveway. And there is a moment after when Caleb says something like "it seemed like it was your first time" jokingly but you can tell from the look on her face that it was. She had been a virgin before him.

The reason she looked disappointed/sad after actually having sex with Peter in the next scene is because she knew that he has betrayed him and had sex with his brother. Later on during the train scene when he says "I love you" she is just feeling really guilty about the whole weekend. I kind of felt at that moment she wanted to tell him the truth and that would have broken her heart and she knew that.

reply

In love or lust? She didn't really know Caleb.

reply

I agree with osty25 mainly. But, as Fawn, I think it wasn't love, just lust. By the time the had sex, she and Caleb had been together like four or five times. With little or no interaction between them.

Emma's tears at the end could have different meanings. I guess that's left for the spectators to decide. For me it was the fact that even when she said different, Caleb was right about she hurting Peter.

I think the film doesn't proves women being whores. It tries to show how wrong people use to be about their selves and about other people. At the end Caleb sees he provoked his brother's betrayal. An he must be thinking Emma wasn't a whore after all.

PS: Peter and Caleb's mother is supposed to be a whore in the beginning of the film. She ends up being a victim after all. That's another clue that the film is not trying to say "all women are whores". That would be a very simplistic view.

reply

You really think it was lust? I'm sure a certain amount of it was. Maybe she was in love with the idea of him? It's interesting. I agree with you about the train scene. I think a lot of it was guilt. And as for all women being whores. What about the men getting it on with the cheating women? Pretty lame to be lumping all the blame on one gender when it takes both to do the deed. Just my thoughts. The movie was good.

reply

Of course she didn't really know him, but this quote from Caleb really puts things into perspective:

"Have you ever been in love with the idea of someone? You know that whatever it is you’re feeling is really just an attraction towards an image of that person that you’ve created in your mind?"

I got the impression that they both felt that way... even if Emma was too naive to realize it.

reply

Unless Caleb was being completely sarcastic, I didn't understand the virgin comment. Only moments before, she had just had sex with his brother... even if it only lasted less than a minute. Are we left to assume that THAT night was the first time she'd ever had sex? If so, her tears make a lot more sense. What a *beep* for someone who had just lost their virginity.

reply

The irony for Caleb is that in trying to protect his brother from getting his heart broken, he was the catalyst for the heart of his brother to inevitably be broken.

reply

Don't worry, just learn to *beep* like a champ then you are all set. Everyone is capable of this feat.

reply

Caleb is a wild dog, his bro is a puppy, girls want both

reply

Don't agree entirely with your analysis of the scenes but your point that if a man is a lousy lay they should expect to be dumped is true. And why is that a big surprise? Newsflash, women have sex drives, too. Why would they stay in a new relationship where their needs aren't being met? Would a man? Of course not.

I disagree that she'll dump him for being a lousy lay, though, and that is why she's crying at the end. The guy was a virgin. His performance will, obviously, improve the more sex they have. If she really loved him, that wouldn't be an issue unless, 1 year in, he's still lousy, which I doubt. I think she's crying because she really loves Caleb and feels bad about it.

reply

I absolutely agree with an love every word of your post except for the part about the character "obviously" becoming a better lover. It's not something that will automatically happen. He'll only get better if she gives him feedback and he listens to it. The sad thing about these kind of relationships is that women (myself excluded) feel guilty about telling a man who is already like a puppy dog about what he can do differently, as if it is a criticism. He'll keep on thinking he's great, she'll keep on missing out on good sex.

She's a hoe, I don't care if it was her first time, when you're in a relationship, you don't screw anyone else! What is wrong with women, they call men dogs and bash them for sleeping around, they cheer other women who do the same type of activity, be it on TV, in a book, or a friend. Women read novels about going outside a relationship for sexual gratification, watch movies containing the same message, what's it tell you, they want a man for security, a home, and a family, then a completely different, and separate man for sex! They don't know what they want, get a guy who's great in bed, but doesn't fill her emotional needs, the one who takes care of emotional needs can't satisfy her wild side, and so on!

reply

Uh yeah, she's a "hoe," while the brother is a paragon of virtue for sleeping with a prostitute, taking pics, and sending it to his ex?
