Disappointed but for another reason

As said by a lot of the people who have read the book this film is supposed to be based on, it's a fascinating story that really drags you in. Partly because of the incredible stories he tells but also for the charismatic way in which it's delivered.

Where some people are disappointed by the content i think i enjoyed a lot of what i saw. The biggest disappointment for me is what i didn't see. I can get over the little inaccuracies (stolen projector in Ireland, how he acquired the Mr Nice passport, etc) but some of the most enjoyable stuff, especially the time he spent in Asia and his dealings with Lord Moynahan, was completely left out and, this more than anything else, made it feel rushed and disjointed. I don't care if he made it up or it was gospel truth, quite a lot of the meat was missing from this pie.

Perhaps from the perspective of someone who hasn't read the book it worked to earn the 6.7 score it currently has, but for me, it's generous giving it a five.

Ifans, no discredit to him, was superb but, generally, i'm feeling a bit let down.

What else was left out from the book that you groovy people missed, or thought would've made a great scene?

No you're right - the book is so rich with details which made it so good, it would have been hard to put them all into a movie - and this still ran to 2 hours.

Markstah! Just watched it and enjoyed the viewing. I haven't read the book which appears to have helped. If you liked this I recommend the Underbelly series from Oz.

I warmed to Underbelly when one of the gangster's wives reminded him to take his 'shotty' to work. Mr Nice appeared to me to chronicle the militarisation and criminalisation of the state's relationship with the have-nots when a typical economic choice of poor people (make what you can of what little you've got) became a lucrative trade. I had the same impression with Underbelly and a few other things (there was a similar film a few years ago about a Californian dope dealer). It's as if we're watching a hostile takeover by vulture capitalists.

The babe and I are looking forward to them coming out on dvd hire. Recently we had a BSG and Deadwood frenzy ("Ow!! I burnt my snatch!")....

I hope your snatch is OK!

I thought that the third series lost its way a bit. On the second viewing I liked it better but I don't know if a fourth series would have been as good. Perhaps it was right to finish it?

I was blown away by the movie, I gave it a 9. Can't imagine how good the book is, but I'm definitely gonna check it out now.

reply

Yeah, compared to the book I think this was rushed. I was expecting the film to flow more and tell the whole story, in much the same way that Blow told the story of George Jung.

reply

well duh

ALL films that come from books miss lots out - otherwise they would be 24 hours long.

I would like it if everything that was in the book was in it, but thats never gonna happen is it? get real!
