Jobson, still making a nuisance of himself

Jobson reached new heights (depths?) of pomposity and rudeness on Radio4's Film Programme (UK) last night (Sept 12), managing to stick it to James ('Eden Lake') Watkins (who surely should be allowed, on the day his movie opened in general release, to enjoy at least a few hours of pride-in-achievement). Jobson blathered on his arrogant way, referring to gleeful horrors -'Hostel', 'Saw', and by implication all the others movies in the tradition of good old '70s Exploitation - as "puerile B movies" and sounding oddly like all those critics who made such asses of themselves 50 years ago when they trashed 'Peeping Tom', 30 years ago when they trashed 'Salo' and Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven, and convincing this listener at least that I'll take crowd-pleasing blood-and-thunder any day over Jobson's self-congratulating hauteur.

Eden Lake was a pretty good film. But it was a masterpiece compared to this. The basic idea has been done numerous times before. It's attempts at saying something interesting about society failed miserably, leaving it as an unoriginal and badly executed thriller. I would certainly not put Eden Lake into the same category as Saw or Hostel. Those films are referred to as Torture Porn which I think is fairly accurate. Eden Lake actually had realistic and recognisable characters, albeit in a heightened situation. I think it said much more about modern society than anything in New Town Killers.
