summer glau's a *beep* jinx

seriously wtf every tv show she is in gets cancelled dont think i'll ever watch a show she's in again.

reply

I guess you're not counting her appearance on The Big Bang Theory but I definitely know what you mean. Can't believe that they canceled Alphas. I guess my dream Sheldon Cooper/Gary TBBT/Alphas crossover episode will never happen lol

One-shot guest appearances don't count. It has to be at least a recurring role for the jinx to kick in. Much as I like Summer Glau, it does seem like every show she's in gets cancelled.

This is a THREADED message board. Please reply to the proper post!

reply

lol I was just talking about this the other day. She's gonna be on Arrow next season. I haven't gotten into that show, but I hope it doesn't end up cancelled too, since I've read good things about it.

reply

That's true for almost every actor.

So it goes.

reply

WHAT?! CANCELLED!?!

NOO!!!!!! :(

reply

Gary did end up doing one episode of TBBT. It was this season and he was a student at the community college where Penny had started taking classes and he and she were studying together and it made Leonard jealous. I'm sure you've seen it by now.

reply

Other than Glau's Big Bang Theory episode, this was the first time I've seen her work and it made me a fan. She certainly seems to have what it takes to have leading roles. Unfortunately sci-fi is a tough genre, especially these days with all the superb wrestling and reality shows that take up a lot of people's free time ;). Scripted shows in general have a tougher time succeeding thanks to reality shows.

reply

Why the F do people watch crappy, fake reality shows to begin with. Most of it is trash. Glad to see so many people love rewarding stupidity these days. Honey Boo boo? The Kardashians? SMFH

reply

Glad to say I don't watch those shows that call themselves reality even though that's about as far from the truth as could possibly be found. Not to knock other sci-fi shows but Alphas gets canceled after two seasons while Warehouse 13 is still on the air? I really hope W13 wasn't getting better ratings.

reply

Last I heard Warehouse 13 was getting good ratings. I wish I could get into that show. I watched about six episodes, but some of the main characters were way too corny at times and I couldn't take it anymore.

reply

second that.

reply

I watched Warehouse 13 when it was wedged between Eureka and Alphas cause, like they hoped, I didn't want to change the channel just to change back an hour later. How could it be doing well when they keep using desperation ploys? And how can anyone watch a show where it doesn't matter if a character dies cause poof they're back again... wow that was an off topic rant.

I don't get why people consistently pick on reality TV and wrestling when pointing the finger of blame as to why their favourite shows get cancelled.

I'm not a fan of reality TV, I find it to be trite and horrendous to watch, but wrestling is actually a scripted show, they just found a niche and a way to make money off of it.

The reason Alphas got cancelled was that it simply wasn't watched by enough people to make it a profitable show to keep on the air. There is often a handful of reasons for this, but the two most common ones are that either the network screwed it up (moving it's timeslot or giving it a crappy one to begin with, not advertising it enough or putting it on against stiff competition on other networks) or the quality of the show was not good enough to appeal to a large enough audience.

I watched all of Season 1 and thought it was average sci-fi at best, but I gave it a shot in Season 2 to win me over and it disappointed me. This isn't an uncommon event in TV. Season 1 of a show does "just enough" to get a second season pickup, they then try to tweak it to make it more popular and either ruin something or turn off those who were already on the fence. Hiring Megan Mullaly in Breaking In is a fantastic example of such a move.

So yeah, in conclusion, there's tons of reasons for a show to fail, but blaming other shows is not exactly common sense now is it?

In this instance I was referring to how Summer Glau generally has roles in sci-fi and since many of those shows fail, her shows fail and she's considered a jinx by some people (the topic of the thread). If she was the host of something like a wrestling show, Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, etc., then she might be on successful shows and most likely would not be considered a jinx.

I believe part of why Alphas was cancelled was because the creator of the show put it primarily in the hands of other people for season 2. Coincidentally a film he helped to write -- The Avengers -- became successful between the end of season 1 and the beginning season 2 of Alphas. The Avengers grossed $1.5 billion worldwide.

"Reality" shows are scripted though loosely. Otherwise I doubt many "reality" shows would be as dramatic as the aired episodes appear to be.

reply

I love her and have seen her in everything except Cape. That said, she usually plays the same mood for all her characters (I don't mind since I like it, but if that is what she is good at - vs being typecast, - her style will lend itself to saying in the scifi relm.

reply

Belatedly, I'm here to say you've gotta watch Cape. I don't know if it's still available on Netflix streaming, but it's really fun.

reply

LOL was thinking the same thing when I heard the show got the axe

Maybe we should all chip in and get her to star in some of these reality TV and bland franchise shows which just to go on forever

LOL i was going to shoot the op down in flames until i looked at Summers TV record..... Angel, Firefly, The Unit, The 4400, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse, Chuck, The Cape, Alphas.... guess what, all cancelled ( as if you did'nt know) okay some of them had run their course but some could have continued a few more seasons. don't get me rong i love Miss Glau but sh$t girl, what you doing wrong.

reply

With the popularity Summer Glau has I am puzzled why they havent made a TV Show with her as the #1 character.

reply

They tried but the idea was cancelled the moment it was brought up.

reply

Well, she only made a brief appearance once in Angel, which ran for 5 seasons (though really is no good after season 3, except for a few episodes here and there). And at least Firefly (the show) didn't end on a huge cliffhanger, and THEN it got a movie to wrap everything up. And Dollhouse, which IMHO is hugely underrated, had an ending to it. I suppose half of my point is that Joss Whedon is really good about not ending things on a cliffhanger. Also, several of the shows you pointed out were on networks (*cough*FOX) that doomed them before they even aired, what with the lack of advertising, airing episodes in the wrong order, changing time slots, etc. I really enjoyed Alphas, even if it was kind of a rehash of XMen, and I got pretty attached to the characters and the story arch. I'm sorry to see it go - and I'm even sorrier that it had to end on such a cliffhanger. If only we could get a little closure!

reply

Several seasons of Buffy ended with cliffhangers as well as at least one on Angel. Like you, I too feel that Alphas was sort of an X-Men rehash (rip-off IMHO).

As for Summer, if one were to see what the ratings of the individual episodes she was in were, it would be helpful to know. Her episodes may have been higher rated than the others. Perhaps the writers and Syfy blew it by not putting her in enough episodes in that case. IMHO of course.

Disagree about Buffy - even though every season had clues to later parts of the planned five season story arc ('getting ready for little sis'), each one (except 4) ended with an episode that would have made a satisfactory finale - wrapping up all the story arcs of the season.

Season 1 - Buffy kills The Master and defeats the prophecy of her own death.

Season 2 - Buffy prevents the end of the world by killing Angel, and leaves Sunnydale. At the time, I thought this WAS the final episode - a tearjerker, but a powerful end to the show

Season 3 - Buffy blows up Mayor Wilkins and the library, and graduates from High School.

Season 4 - Buffy meets the Original Slayer in a dream - obviously an epilogue to the Adam-killing finale, setting up what was intended to be the final season. Presumably, that's because season 4 was the only one in which JW was reasonably sure that there was going to be another season.

Season 5 - Buffy kills her most formidable foe yet, a god no less (albeit a rather dim-witted one), but dies to save her little sister. This WAS supposed to be the final episode - Buffy was supposed to stay dead. After this, JW was pretty much making it up as he went along.

Season 6 - Buffy, or more accurately Giles and Xander, stop Willow destroying the world and bring her back to the side of good.

Season 7 - Buffy destroys the Hellmouth and gets Willow to turn every potential Slayer in the world into a Slayer, thereby ensuring that she will be able to take an occasional vocation.

She saved the world. A lot.

^Thinking the same thing after watching the final episode sadly enough.

She's in Terminator, its gets cancelled. She's in Firefly its get cancelled, she in The Cape it gets cancelled, she's in dollhouse, it gets cancelled, she starred in The Unit, it gets cancelled. she's was in the 4400, it gets cancelled.

Sorry but this thread is named so accurately that its true, she's a damn jinx!!!

Summer Glau's practically the female Ted McGinley.

She better not appear in the second season of Continuum. As i 'WANT' that show to last a long time!

Yeah, i guess it had nothing to do with it's poor ratings, that's right look for blame where it doesn't exist, the ratings weren't that great in the first place, SyFy decided to give it another season and the ratings didn't improve.

If I recall correctly the series was almost canceled during it's first season, as I just stated SyFy decided to give it a second chance it failed, it's the entertainment business and it's about ratings and money, it wasn't bringing in what it needed to stay on the air so they axed it.

Excerpted from the article 'Alphas' canceled by Syfy - http://bit.ly/UqVqLN

The axing isn’t too surprising since Alpha‘s second season debut last summer only delivered 1.7 million viewers, which was down significantly from its series debut the prior year. Syfy tried switching showrunners between the show’s first and second season in hopes of improving the numbers.

The reason her other shows were canceled were for the same reasons, low ratings and scheduling by the network FOX, three of her series were on Friday night a death slot second only to Saturday night.

FOX is a network that is notorious for canceling series after 1 to 3 episodes.

Well i just seen episode 16 of Hawaii Five-0. guess what Summer guest starred, here;s hoping... lol (they don't cancel the show) because of the Summer jynx.

reply

Well I don't watch "Hawaii Five-O" so I wouldn't care if they canceled it.

Alex O'Loughlin was on several series that were also canceled and he had two of his own series that were canceled by CBS not to mention that movie that he made with Jennifer Lopez that bombed back in 2010. If the series got canceled it would be more his fault than anyone else, he's the star as he was on "Moonlight" and "Three Rivers" both on CBS and canceled by CBS.

It's more of a joke. Nobody is saying that it's Summer that is personally killing series', it is just a running joke from her career.

I don't think the OP was joking anymore than the hundreds of other posts by posters on other threads about actors whose series get canceled.

Yes some people on IMDb do believe an actor can jinx a series.

I guess all the out rage over Ben Affleck being cast as Batman is just a joke as well, some people believe he'll tank the franchise since most of his films don't do that well hen it comes to action films. He's had better success with some of his dramas. I can't judge things i haven't read or seen.

Ms. Glau tends to get cast in fantasy and science-fiction as a general rule most series in this genre don't do well. You can name most of these series on one hand at any given time in a given television season.

Minds that have withered into psychosis are far more terrifying than any character of fiction.
