a part that was racist? maybe...

There was a bit were what looked like a chinese man (the hat and the beard) and what i'm guessing was meant to be a black guy were in the film. They said something like "i like killing Japanese" or something, the Ruka kills them just after smashing into the pile of body parts. Just wondering if anybody else thought it was abit wierd, may be racist or if it was a view on Japanese stereotypes taken in humour. Not particularly bothered either but just wondering.

reply

I thought it was meant to take a stab at typical racist stereotypes meant for the sake of humor, not malice. I thought it was a bit over the top, but so was the rest of the movie so I wasn't bothered by it, either.

reply

I thought it was. I just finished watching it. I am a black man and I was disgusted.
I wanted to see this movie for a long time, heard it was good, finally ordered it on demand through cable for 4.99, and I want my refund. I don't fund racist movies.

I would advise all people who are chinese and people who are of color, to not rent or buy this movie.

I would also like to know why the director and everyone associated with this film would allow racism to be put into a film. Its 2009! We are all one race and that's the human race.

reply

I'm chinese. Thought it was funny myself. Don't take things so seriously.
Just think about what kind of movie your watching.

It's quite obviously a parody of racial stereotypes, if you failed to see that that's your loss.

Also, no, we're not all one race. We're one species with many different races (albeit heavily mixed up, but still). It's just like dogs, one species with a hell of a lot of different races with different appearances. I think the sooner we stop getting hung up on our differences, and the sooner we throw out idiotic clichés that we're all the same, the better we'll be as a species.

@Pumpernickel,
The level to which you are misinformed is both disheartening and laughable. You are correct in wagging your finger at the other poster, but your allusions to intelligence that follow are down right scary.

First, race does not, and will never apply to dogs... Variants of the Lupis family are primarily separate species, as defined by the ability (or in this case, the lack thereof) to interbreed; which restricts assimilation of all traits into a single resulting species.

"Race" is a sociocultural construct used among humans, all of which can interbreed and are thereby a single species. Dogs have neither the intellect nor the social institutions needed to give rise to concepts of "race". Race is not tied to a single phenotypic expressions as you seem to assume; in humans skin color does not define the "races" human culture, many factors of behavior are taken into account distinguishing peoples. As such, race is a socially-created phenomenon restricted to humanity. How many races are there within what you probably consider the homogeneous Chinese culture? 1? 2? Ha, can you say 30+? Lots of races look identical to one another, can this be said for dogs? Anyways, please reconsider spreading your ignorance around, its contagious.

reply

You're speaking sociocultural constructs while I am speaking biology. I could just as well be speaking about apples and you of knitting.

Generally you define a race as members of the same species that can interbreed and create a fertile offspring (interbreeding is possibly with infertile offspring is possible between some species, for example equine). Two members of different species cannot create fertile offspring (okay, there's been a very few examples, again equine, where they have been fertile).

How many races are there? I don't know, how long is a string? It's a rather pointless question how many different races there are as it brings absolutely nothing to the discussion. Of course the chinese culture is anything but homogeneous, pointing that out to someone who knows while trying to look like a patronizing, smug and high-horsed person reflects more on your idiocy than on mine.

If you are so tied into the idea that we're all the same, like some people beating the drum of equality is, you fail to see that we're all different. If you cannot recognize that we are all different in biological makeup, significantly so to be defined as different races, however many and mixed up we are, I don't even see the point in discussing this with you further as it would be tantamount to beating my head against a brick wall.

"Lots of races look identical to one another, can this be said for dogs?"

Yes, there's quite a few canine races that look very similar to each other. Look for instance at this link, they're all different species yet there are many that look extremely similar: http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

reply

Different breeds, not species. They are all dogs and therefore simply different breeds of dog. Calling them "different species" would mean the animals pictured were distinctly different from one another (ie: Dogs, cats, sparrows, etc).

no offense.

reply

Too late for a refund. You should have researched about the film before you ordered it on pay per view.

i am offender by this comment and i demand a refund if you being banend from the internet. you consider african people to be the only ones with skin color in your 4th line. i also would like to know why do you search for racism issues where there are none, but you wont be able to answer that because you will have your internet disconnected.
and yes, this makes as much sense as you do.

Dude, did you see the shape of his head? You're a conehead as well? Stop victimising yourself!

reply

What are you talking about? It was a mutant. Im black and I liked this movie?

reply

People like you need to get out of the Internet

reply

There is no 'human race', there's a human species, which has sub-races within it.

I don't really care if this offended you - since when do you give a crap what offends others? The amount of pro-genocide, woman hating garbage that comes out of African American's mouths in the media, I can't help but feel this is total hypocrisy.

reply

Yeah i think it was meant to be taken in good humour, as is the whole film. Couldn't really see how people would get that angry as eckoman has said. Those easily offended shouldn't of watched the film.

reply

The Japanese guy made up as a "black" guy had a cone head. As though maybe the people making this had never seen a black person before?

reply

I was under the impression that the "black guy" was actually meant to be some strange "volcano head" dude considering Ruka chops the top of his head off and blood sprays out

back in 98 I did a titty comedy for Skinemax. Sex Camp, ya remember it?

reply

wait wait wait! we're talking about a movie that depicts rampant and graphic homicide, self-mutilation, murder fetishism, and teenage prostitution; and you're worried about something that might possibly maybe potenitally be an insensitive portrayal of an ethnic sterotype, but could also just be another weird mutant in a movie full of weird mutants???

kill all the people you want... just don't be un-PC about it. is that about right?

priorities are funny.

Funny, I thought he was supposed to be from France...

reply

Dude, this film has nonsenses like a fist cannon, and blood propelled flying cop, and every single fricking wound in the movie sprays blood like garden sprinklers, it's not meant to be taken seriously.

...a little fantastic, and fleeting, and out of reach.

Hmmm, a movie where there are different 'faces' i.e. creatures...huge amounts of gore...and over-the-top action...and a weird cone-headed 'person' is considered a black individual.

I personally didn't know what the *beep* that was, but last I checked I don't have a cone-head, and I don't have a conehead, or have abnormal features.

How the *beep* was that racist?

Yes i thought the same thing when I saw that part. Then I was distracted by more gore. I'm not sure if it was meant to be funny, racist or what.. Don't care, I'm sure you will only know for sure, if you have been brought up in the japanese culture.

reply

Get real! Racism against Afro-Americans is, has never been, and most likely will never be an issue in Japan. We never brought them to our soil and enslaved them in case you didn't know, and we won't in near future. We have our own race-issue to tackle with, but anti-Black is not one.

We get sick n' tired when we arrest Black American soldiers in Japan (Okinawa in particular) for raping one of our citizen. And this happens more than often, I'm sure you don't here about it. Most of the time, Americans file an aggressive complaint claiming that the arrest was unlawful and based on racism. And most of the time, they get away with it. They are arrested because of the crime committed, not because of the color of the skin.

Don't you drag along your problem onto our soil!

Assuming you're replying to my post, I say (belatedly); try to read what I wrote.
I said, we have our own problem.
And as to the issue in Okinawa, I merely reported what takes place there.
