Weak story really dragged it

I prefer a good story in my zombie flicks, particularly if the action doesn't cut it. This movie had a lot of contradictions and complete "wtf" moments to it.

The beginning where half the cops are taken out because they started yelling at the manager was ridiculous. Why did it take so long to rig the explosives? Why even use explosives they could have just kicked in the door or shot the knob off it wasn't a fort. They blew their surprise just standing around and then arguing with the manager. Pathetic. Maybe they were all meter maids.

The movie didn't explain the explosions at all, or why people so magically instantaneously became zombies everywhere en masse. There's no rhyme or reason why thousands immediately went for the building. Presumably the cops had just left the city to go to that building, so they should have noticed thousands of zombies. The turn rate in this film seemed to be a couple hours so it would have taken awhile for that many to build up.

Now for the really bad character development:

Aurore was a train wreck. Absolutely unsympathetic as a character she murdered one of her "family" and then didn't care that the other sacrificed himself to help them.

Bola and Rene''s betrayal near the end was ridiculous. We don't know what happened in Nigeria but it seems big brother had been caring for him his whole life. Bola's turn really seemed forced. They were busy battling for their lives and Ade shot a zombie in the head while they were screwing around. Ohhh, what an insult. Abandon a life of brotherhood, take your brother's weapons and separate from him in your hour of need because he stopped you from screwing around some more. Terrible plot device.

Aside from Ouessem's sacrifice being the absolute coolest scene in the film, it really was pointless. Couldn't he have waited to sacrifice himself until he knew that they actually needed him too, it wasn't like he stopped them from being overrun by hundreds of zombies. Which leads me to one final observation. Even accepting that for no reason thousands of zombies immediately formed in an hour and all want to get into this one building (as can be seen by the empty streets at daybreak) How did they all get into the basement? They aren't using the doors, they have no observable intelligence. The only power they possess beyond magical super strength and uncrushable skulls (reference chick fight) is they can disappear, which was demonstrated when the old man used the machine gun to mow down about 100 zombies in a hallway yet by the end all the bodies had magically cleared out of the way so fresh zombies could run straight down the hall with impunity.

Oh and I hated the end. The woman was terrible and should have been tossed out a window the first time she started pointing her guns at everyone. The only satisfaction in the end was knowing I didn't care at all what happened next in the world because she sucked, everyone cool was dead, and the whole idea of a "horde" of zombies descending on them within an hour or two was completely ridiculous to the point of uninteresting.

I agree with everything in your post. However, the woman being the sole survivor after having executed Ade does complete the circle.

The father of her child had been killed by Ade's gang. The sole reason the cops went in there was to get revenge (on her behalf). So, having her survive and take revenge personally meant that the mission technically was accomplished. At least for her.

That being said, that whole thing is very forced.

I didn't care for the movie. The characters were not likable, there were too many things that didn't make sense and generally, the movie was just difficult to care about.

I prefer a good story in all my flicks. That said, it's become almost commonplace in zombie movies, not to really explain what is causing the outbreak, or to only give half-baked clues. This film is no exception and you can only go with the flow, even though I totally agree with many of the points that you make. I liked the idea of the 2 opposing groups having to work together to try to escape from the building and I thought the action sequences were pretty good. We could generally see what was occurring, which is always a plus.🐭
