For those who have seen it, how does this rate to Ong Bak and Protector?

I love those two movies, is this pretty much the same kind of thing? What can I expect from this film?

reply

I love those two movies too. I think the film you refer to as "Protector" is called Warrior King over here. At least i think so.

To be honest i would say that story in Chocolate is better than any of the Tony Jaa movies. Its quite a riveting story infact. The martial arts in this movie isn't as good as Tony's. Nowhere near as developed in terms of style and impact.

All the same i think JeeJa Yanin is definately one to watch, i hope its not the last we hear from her.

I'm sorry but it's no where near as good as ong bak in my opinion, some of it looks so fake, what I loved sooo much about Tony Jaa is that all of his action looks so bone crunchingly real, Ong Bak is really tough to compare to any martial arts flick though so it is way unfair to compare it to ong bak.

Chocolate is not as interesting as Ong Bak but isn't as action-overloaded as The Protector and has a more interesting story. Still I'd say the Tony Jaa movies are better but Chocolate is a very, very close third. Hoping to see the two of them act together either as partners or opponents sometime soon.

Tony Jaa is on another level in terms of martial arts talent, but I just didn't get into that story of stolen elephants. I liked Chocolate better myself, more personal, deeper, imo.

Well it's a martial arts action movie just like the other two. The protagonist, a young Autistic girl, is quite a departure from the typical martial arts movie. So I would say that the story has more heart and is admirable for doing something new. Like any other martial arts movie it does eventually lead to her getting into epic fights with large groups of people.

Not to downplay the actress' talent because she is very good but Tony Jaa naturally is better. They both do some awesome stunts but Tony Jaa makes it look effortless and looks smoother and less choreographed and seems to have a few more tricks up his sleeve. On the other hand seeing a tiny little girl do all this stuff is impressive in it's own right.

The fight choreography is similar to the other two movies with great usage of the environment to keep things interesting. There are however no new directorial tricks like the one take hotel scene in The Protector.

Overall I would say it is another solid movie from the director, definitely worth watching, maybe worth owning, but not necessarily the best work from the director.

<<There are however no new directorial tricks like the one take hotel scene in The Protector.>>

I disagree.

There has never been a directorial trick that compares to the finale on the side of the 4 story building. I have had people tell me that that scene was the greatest thing they had ever seen in a martial arts/action flick, ever. This thing brought down the house at the Toronto International Film Festival, with the place absolutely going wild. People were jumping up and down screaming and pumping their fists. The same thing happened when they showed it at the Berlin Festival, where it was pre-screened to movie reviewers, who did the same thing. The most cynical movie goers anywhere were acting like kids.

Plus, I don't think there has ever been a martial arts fight between two mentally handicapped kids before. Nobody anywhere would even think of that, much less film it. There are flaws in the film to be sure, but lack of originality is not one of them.

Thanks for the info about the festivals & the viewer reactions. Heartening, actually.

I have just recently watched Ong Bak and Chocolate and for me I enjoyed Chocolate much more.

Tony Jaa is very impressive and I liked Ong Bak alot, but there is something more gritty about the action in Chocolate where I found Ong Bak to be a bit cartoonish.

reply

Tony Jaa is way more intense. Simple as that. Some of JeeJa's moves look too choreographed. Jaa is just way better. I agree with alot of the others that you can't compare this to any of Jaa's mainstream movies except for the storyline. I find it hard to get into a movie about elephants which is of course what Ong-Bak 2 is about.

reply

JeeJa's stunts are pretty commendable for girl of her age. But realistically speaking, this film & it's stunts are nothing close to ONG BAK, leave alone Tom Yum Goong. Jaa is in a league of his own. The stroyline part is debatable though.

reply

Well the fighting is good and the story is good too
I was suprised at how good it was
usually non commercialized martial art films are bad but this is a really good movie

Plus it incorperates Jackie Chan / Bruce Lee / Tony Jaa's fighting styles and its awesome because of that ( She learned martial arts from watching movies )

The Narrator is Tyler

This rates along side them as one of the best imo. Okay, she isn't as good as Tony Ja yet, but she is still young. What makes this so good is the story, and the fact that the body count is in the hundreds! The climax literally lasts over 20 minutes for heaven's sake!! It is one fight sequence after another, culminating in a fantastic stunt-filled finale spectacular.
The girl is beautiful and extremely talented, and I look forward to seeing her career grow. This is a fantastic film imo. The only thing I wished it did have was more one on one fights. There was only really one during the whole film, which didn't last too long. The rest is her against many. A more tactile one on one fight at the end would have put it higher up my list.
Ong Bak and Protector have better action (just), but this has action almost as good with a superb climax, but also has a much better story.

in my opinion its far far behind the Tony Jaa movies, i bought this film because i saw the trailer and i was expecting big contact fights like Ong Bak and the Potector, but the fights look to choreographed, not just the moves but the hits, what i didnt like its for example that the girl gives a kick to a guy and it looks like the kick wasnt strong but still the guy goes down and stays down,in my opinion it looks unrealistic and boring.

reply

I'd rate them:

1. Ong Bak
2. Chocolate
3. Protector

On Bak rules. Chocolate is solid. Protector was just too corny for me. He wears the little scarf and the big white guy throws the elephant? Yeah, whatever.

I liked Chocolate much better than the other two. I thought it had a better story and it is very rewatchable. I also like Ong Bak and The Protector, but the storylines are pretty lame.

reply

Including better acting and directing. Tony Jaa maybe one of the best fighters ever put to celluloid, but his acting and the directing in his movies sucked.

And the plot was not good in his movies. Let's do alittle bit better than looking for a lost elephant.

At least with Chocolate (which always wasn't very good plot wise) had more heart to it.

One thing you can count on is the fat, male sidekick.

funny thing - there's actually a scene where she's watching Ong Bak - when he is beating the crap out of the white guy in the bar
