What was reason for blackmail?

If anyone knows let me in on it. Thank you.

remember the video of the story he did about the girl who had the baby and it died so she left it at the church, well the girl he was interviewing wasn't the real girl who had a baby. the person he interviewed was pretending to be her, to make his story better, which helped him win an award, he prolly paid her off and thought that was the end of that. but she keeps calling him, and blackmailing him with the intent prolly to get more money, or she would expose that the news story he won an award for was a fraud (remember in the beginning how he kept getting phone calls at work from some woman), not wanting that to happen he ends up killing her...

He picked a prostitute that was more than willing to do the deed for a fee.

Once she found out he was 'awarded', she wanted to cash in too. Thing was this guy wasn't getting rich off the story no matter how moving it was.

In the end, he took care of it using her to get rid of the blackmail and springboarding his career against the corrupt DA...the bit*h Karma ruined his parade.

SPOILERS ALL OVER

But this is what I find somewhat illogical: There is this Buffalo TV rookie who fakes a documentary and wins some award for it. He goes down to Louisiana, works for another (bigger yet still local) TV station; his ambitions for investigative work are destroyed by his boss who makes him cover local events like dogshows. Being the Buffalo prostitute he had used for his award-winning-feature: Would blackmailing this fellow really look like a promising idea? I mean: Who cares for his prize except for his girlfriend? How much does he make as a local TV reporter? I doubt that the money she could expect from blackmailing him would pay much more than the trip from Buffalo to LA.
