RNBDJ: I loved it! What about you?

Hey guys! It was a really long wait and am pretty much satisfied after watching the movie! But I still feel it could've been better. The story was really good, its just the screenplay. It is entertaining and funny and very emotional too but somewhere it made me feel that the screenplay was not strong enough for a film with SRK in it and especially Aditya Chopra directing it after two amazing films earlier! I also think that this is not a movie that everyone would like. But I'm still very much happy with the movie and I can watch it a couple of more times on big screen! So, what do you people think?

This movie was good, but not amazing.

I am pretty shattered after reading all this negative feedback. I will check it out tomorrow myself.

piviper. I thought jodhaa was visually beautiful but very lengthy and at times very boring. JTYJN is a hopelessly cheesy movie from what I can see (even though I have stopped watching after 2/3rds of it)

minouche - see the film! I think it will be refreshing and heaps better than the fake and pathetic JTYJN. I though JA was overlong and boring in parts but decent. This one will NOT be boring.

reply

Yes Jodhaa Akbar is boring and blah blah and JTYJN is fake and pathetic and Ghajini is a remake of a rip-off, Lagaan is overlong and boring, RDB is not thought provoking, Fanaa Suks, TZP is a normal movie shown everday on tv blah blah blah but Swades is not at all boring! RNBDJ is GREAT! WATCH IT! Watch it! .. Seriously, you are pathetic. I use to think you knew about Cinema but all you share here is that SRK films rock hands down.

reply

You should have been used to it by now. I said it earlier. Srk is not my favourite but he deserves better set of fans.

It was a really nice movie. SRK's performance was great.

reply

Dude, OSO was an entertainer beyond compare !! and this is a love story which is simply very nicely made.. SRK is the obvious star, I watched it today and fell in love with his character..

Fortunately most Indians and movie goers are not like critics who feel its their birthright to criticise everything, though they themselves are hopeless.

I loved the movie and it does matter if anyone in the world says it was bad, just does not.. I watch movies for myself not for other's liking.. Hope you get it.. And anyone who like good acting will love SRK here.. The King no doubt.

reply

I had no trouble sleeping through the 3.5 hour long and excruciatingly slow JA though! This one is being loved by most audiences - but there will always be outliers and agenda based haters - like Moron Adarsh!

In your face WoooFy, the movie has earned 60 crore in its opening weekend and has grossed more than dhoom 2, the benchmark.

I would say that means the audience loved it. That is despite the economic downturn, recent blasts and etc.

Brilliant movie. Don't listen to the opinions of the likes of WoooFy

Taran Adarsh?? All I remember is how he keeps praising SRK films and now all of a sudden when he writes about his dissapointment at seeing RNBDJ, he is suddenly labeled a "moron". Nice job.

reply

Taran always was and always will be a moron - no matter whose films he praises or disses. lesner can stop being a pathetic whiner and tell me when I liked Taran even when he was praising SRK films. A moronic BO analyzer cannot a reviewer make. Similarly - TZP always was and always will be a made for TV film - no matter how much Aamir fans love it. And it will always be tainted with issues relating to who the true owner of the directorial cap was.

Despite what Aamir fans think - there was world of cinema pre-Lagaan when Aamir was doing Mela, and Dil and Love Love Love. And these fans will bring up disaster of Dulha Mil Gaya (a film not yet released) to pull down SRK. Pathetic. Now Aamir is back with the ripoff remake and selling his 8 packs and the twin pack above that - in home videos on every channel, and daily press conferences. The voices that slammed SRK for "selling" his abs look and overselling OSO are strangely silent at this juncture.

If Paheli and TZP were both disastrous picks for the Oscars then what is the debate about? Basically about running down one person while claiming moral high ground for another who is not better in media whoring, and in manipulation.

What films ones likes or does not like is immaterial here - pitviper still has not justified his list where DCH and MP were hits and DMG a disaster. Is there a point in arguing with people who live in an imaginary world?

i don't what's up with all the hate people have for this movie but i thought it was great!!!! i really hated Om Shanti Om so i was kind of worried about Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi but it exceeded my expectations and i LOVED it! in my opinion, its the best SRK movie since Veer-Zaara!

reply

[deleted]

I loved it too!
Must say Suri was ugly to look at but had he's heart in the right place. brilliant acting by SRK - it takes guts and a true actor to let himself be presented in that way.
Why does it matter that Taani should have been able to recognise Suri as Raj. It is a minor, technical matter. The fact is that he attempted to disguise himself to spend time with her. Most Bollywood films have the most ridiculous of plots, with much greater flaws and require you to be brain dead to be able to watch them. This was a simple story, beautifully told. It was substance over style. Do movies have to have convoluted plots to touch or connect with you? Not in my book!
I enjoyed it much better than OSO, where I found SRK's hamming embarrasing - at times.
Anushka was very good too.

reply

GREAT MOVIE,

srk captures our hearts yet again!!!

wonderful performance by anushka.

Awesome soundtrack consisting of Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai, Haule Haule, Dance Pe Chance & Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte

my favourites are Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai and Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte.

LOVE U SRK

This film is set to be the biggest grosser of 2008. Read the BO reports that are coming in. Word of mouth is excellent and if this crashes then please come and bash me and I will happily accept the abuse. US Fri numbers are almost at par with OSO too.

As for character building and realistic plot - I cannot argue with people who think an emperor wrestling an elephant or practicing swordplay shirtless outside a zenana is realistic. That makes about as much sense as an alter-ego and a dance competition. Notice that I am not calling you a man with no discernment or a brief attention span - so please be mature here.

"The alter-ego in Rab Ne Bana is completely ridiculous! any idiot could tell that the voice and eyes and face were the same person... either Taani needed glasses or she was just a complete idiot! Its like a mustache and oiled hair make a world of a difference in a person! Please!"

If we go by your logic then a human can't fly like superman, human can't release spider like spiderman, right? It's just a movie for godsake!

reply

When queen Jodhaa is a non-existent figure, when history is warped at every turn, and skin show and Ekta Kapoor like Saas bahu drama is used in a serious story then it is unreal and useless for me. Did I say a word against Swades? I can sit through 3 + hours of serious stuff, just not skin show and elephant wrestling. The alter-ego is a common ploy in stories - and if SRK could not be recognized on his own sets in the Suri guise then I think a self obsessed wife is allowed to not distinguish between the two personas. This film is head and shoulders above OSO.

As for paheli - that was about 10 times better than Eklavya and even TZP as an Oscar entry. Even JA would be better than TZP in fact.

MOVIE REVIEW | 'RAB NE BANA DI JODI'
Forlorn Husband Makes the Right Moves
By RACHEL SALTZ
Published: December 13, 2008

In the last few years Hindi films have become slicker and faster, full of dizzying camera moves and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it editing. The technical exuberance is almost always impressive, but it’s starting to seem like its own cliché.

How refreshing, then, to settle into “Rab Ne Bana di Jodi” (“A Match Made by God”), a love story that has a different pace and feel than the recent crop of action thrillers. “Rab,” which reteams the director Aditya Chopra and Shahrukh Khan, Bollywood’s reigning superstar, is “soft, sweet and slow,” in the words of one of its songs. It deftly blends comedy, the ruling tone of the new Bollywood, with melodrama, the ruling tone of the old.

Mr. Khan sports glasses and a cheesy little mustache as Surinder Sahni, a shy self-described geek who works for Punjab Power in Amritsar. Surinder is gaga for his wife, Taani (the newcomer Anushka Sharma), who, because of various tragedies in the film’s first few minutes, may have lost the ability to love or be happy.

To win Taani’s heart — or just to see her smile — Surinder gets an extreme makeover and disguises himself as Raj, a swaggering goofball who favors tight jeans and T-shirts with slogans like “Bad Boy.” Raj becomes Taani’s partner in a dance competition (“First time in Amritsar!”), and boy meets girl all over again.

Mr. Chopra’s 1995 film, “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” starring Mr. Khan, remains a touchstone of contemporary Bollywood, and the two do excellent work again here. The Surinder/Raj dual role seems tailor-made (probably was) for Mr. Khan, who gets to show off his twin talents: he suffers nobly and entertains with panache. And Mr. Chopra demonstrates how a director can master technology without being mastered by it. For him, storytelling comes first. (The plot has its flaws, but they’re not deadly.)

“Rab” is suffused with God talk and movie talk; religion and films are how the characters learn lessons about life and love. The best and most joyous sequence here is a song-and-dance number that pays witty tribute to Bollywood and Hollywood styles through the decades. It’s a lesson that goes down easy.

Anyone who does not understand that TZP like Hallmark Hall of fame films come on American TV every Sunday afternoon, while Paheli was uniquely Indian - has no business thinking of Oscar entries. Read what American reviews said about TZP at release time, and also check out Paheli rating and reviews on Rottentomatoes.

Paheli was at the very least BETTER than Mangal Pandey, Parineeta and certainly Page 3 - I detest that film with a passion. For Oscars Rottentomatoes is a better indicator than sniggering people. I liked Eklavya. What the competition is, determines exactly what? That is not in the control of any one in India. In 2008 and pickings were slim, but JA was the most suited.

A Wednesday can be nominated next year.

reply

Bhandarkar makes soul-less films like cheap CNN exposes. The academy would laugh. And Parineeta - todo todo the last 15 minutes would have the audience rolling on the floor. The film that needed to go was Priyan Kanjeevaram - instead stupid Aamir pushed his film forward. I hate when directors try to push thier films into being sent when the film has no place at the Oscars... Aamir was just jealous that he did not get anything for for Lagaan... too bad his plan will completely backfire (TZP is a mindnumbingly mediocre film)!

1. In which alternate dimension was DCH a superhit? It was average. And Mangal Pandey an out and out flop, same goes for Earth. If you will talk of BO then at least talk sense with real numbers and outcomes. I can make numbers and hits up too!

2. Did Aamir's career begin in 1999? What happened before that? I can cherry pick numbers and years too.

3. It is almost entertaining to see you do this exercise where you are pulling out special appearances and in fact unreleased films for SRK. Dulha Mil Gaya is still filming but apparently it is a flop. And Shaurya where SRK recited a poem in a voiceover is a flop for him.

4. Do not know about Aamir much, but his fans are the biggest losers on this planet.

5. You forgot to add that Aamir stole Amole Gupte's film from under his nose - that is a distinction SRK does not have yet.

6. It is even more entertaining that Heyy babyy ( a special appearance) is listed a flop - it was a superhit and last year. Your memory cannot be that short. Akkki fans will lynch you now.

Hey,

I think Shahrukh Khan has a charming personality and charisma he is a big star. But Aamir Khan is a better actor any day. Each of his movies see a different Aamir while Shahrukh in every movie is Shahrukh. I do not like his acting in any of his movies except DDLJ and Swades.

Aamir even has credible performances in his flops.

Agreed Shahrukh sells and he is a bigger star but not because of his acting.. just because of his charisma.

I loved the movie, such a sweet love story .. SRK's performance, Anushka, Vinay Pathak .. all of them brilliant. Dont know what else this movie could have had.. I just feel in love with the movie.. Just a very sweet movie.

I have no complaints, one of the best love story's I have watched till date.

This movies is one of SRK's best movies in recent time.

And the Girl was too Good...she is gonna be a BIG star one day.

reply

exactly! SRK hasn't made a great movie since Veer-Zaara...well i heard Chak De India was good but still, he hasn't made a really fun loving movie for quite a long time and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was it!

reply

i totally agree with you.

it is in these types of movies in which srk shines.

movies in which he expresses his cheeky charm, smile.

other movies where srk expresses his biggest asset include obviously DDLJ as well as K3G, KKHH, Kal ho na ho, Veer Zaara, mohabittein,

KANK, Don, Chak De & OSO all weren't the typical love stories i have grown up watching srk. Nevertheless they are still great movies however not a "Raj" or "Rahul".

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Q484sTVBBEk&feature=related (additional parts)

is an excellent Q&A / feedback on RNBJ. Srk answers questions very well.

Amazing movie, can't wait to see it again
