why do hindi movies have english titles?

Well, I for one am happy that there are subtitles, since I don't speak Hindi. Also, English is one of the official languages of India.

we use several english words in our daily lives.
car, mall, phone, internet, google, search engines and what not.

i guess its just the fact that everybody understands the title be it english or hindi.

they do speak the dialogues in hindi, so the language being good enough or not is not really important here.

krazy 4 in hindi would be Pagal Chaar. that just sounds silly, but that is what i think.

English titles and stinking cheap bad rip-off plots, it's a shame really. Specially guys like Abbas-Mustan, geez I hate them I cant recall a single film they made, that is not a rip off.

India has the third highest number of people in the world that are literate in english(google it). so you can take it that everyone understands what the title would mean.

besides whats in the name? American Pie didnt have any reference to Pie-- American or mathematical or apple! just like To kill a mocking bird gives u no idea of how to really kill a mockingbird!

Three points: 1) It depends on the subject of the movie. Obviously a traditional story set in the 17th century would not have an English title. A modern story might.

2) Hindi is a mixed language. A lot of Arabic words--like "lakin" for "but"--and Farsi words "khoda hafiz" for "good-bye." No language is "pure"--after all, the vocabulary of English is 70% from French! (And Hindi--pajamas, bungalow, jungle, khaki, etc.)

3) As far as I can see, younger Indians do not consider English a "foreign" language--it's part of their everyday speech, and, as someone noted already, it's one of India's official languages. Is Shah Rukh Khan more comfortable speaking English or Hindi? Aishwarya?

A lot of comments (not just here) show a lack of knowledge of history. Often you see comments about "Western" dress. Roman togas? Greek robes? If they mean pants, they're Central Asian, not Western at all. Take what you want from the rest of the world and don't worry about it!
