Abrupt endings for Hopkins' and Naomi Watts' characters

It felt like the film was missing half its ending.

It also felt like the gallery owner and the artist he was having an affair with were underwritten.

Indeed a very abrupt ending, it spoiled the Movie. I don't like open ends.

Completely agree and glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way. The film ends somehow suddenly, like the daughter's story was forgotten to be told in the end.

Woody seemed to be going with a minimalist approach to the ending, as if leaving them all hanging added some kind of profundity to the point of the Shakespeare quote that drives the theme of the movie ("a tale told by an idiot...signifying nothing."). I, like others, found it rather infuriating, even though the application of the quote is worthy of deeper discussion.

Josh Brolin's character also ended abruptly as it seemed as if he would be caught red-handed for his theft. We'll never know.

Yes, life is often the charade characterized by Shakespeare, but I'm not sure withholding outcomes of certain events is exactly the same point.
