So, Gerty didn't understand that there were two of them?

Because it acted weird when they would as Gerty about each other, and Gerty wouldn't give answer. Gerty was programmed to work for Sam, but not for 2 Sams, so it didn't know how to proceed in such case?

Its been a while since i saw this film, but if i remember correctly, Gerty did know. But the scenario they had was a paradox in its programming, since he is not supposed to tell either Sam that there were clones.

Gerty was therefore trying his best to answer Sam without breaking protocol.

Oh yes, very undateable.

You are entirely correct with your answer. GERTY was doing what he was programed to do, to help Sam Bell. It didn't matter that there were one or two Sam Bells, GERTY still followed his programing.

The scene where he tells the first Sam Bell that all his memories are fake and then the smiley face on GERTY's console starts weeping, that made me tear up. It was totally evil what Lunar Industries was doing, all for the purpose of saving a few bucks. GERTY had empathy for Sam Bell because he was there to make sure Sam Bell was taken care of and not harmed. That is why he did what he did to help the two Sam Bells with their plan. He was following his program but it was still touching.

This is an emotionally powerful movie.

Tell me about it. Your chest gets tight as you wonder what Sam must be experiencing at that moment. Extremely poignant!
