Upset about Kansas Statements

I must say when I saw that there was a character from Kansas on the show I was excited. After seeing the potrayal I was very upset and angry. They make her sound like a dumb HillBilly. They also incorrectly show that we grow corn as a major export, it's wheat. Kansas is a beautiful place and not a barried wasteland as portrayed. People from this state are smart and proud. You want HillBilly, go to the south. Please do better re search next time Disney.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. Bailey Pickett is extremely smart and had a cute accent when the show started. Her Parents and Grandmother were portrayed as a hard-working and loving family with good values. Wheat may be the major export in Kansas but where Bailey is from it's corn.

She may have her moments, but most are wrong!

Bailey is the class valedictorian who gets into Yale and will win the Nobel Peace Prize in the future. And Moose can beat Cody at chess, which makes him a genius. So Kansas is pretty well represented. But most people's view of Kansas is based on The Wizard of Oz, so I hope you're satisfied with that image. If not, not much you can do because it is an eternal classic seen by everyone forever.

Honestly, the farm itself looks like my grandparents' farm in northern Kentucky (except they grow tobacco, not corn). However, as someone who's never been to Kansas, I can't say it doesn't look like one from there.

A lot of people from states like Kentucky and Kansas (and other Great Plains/Southern states) are portrayed as dumb. But Bailey absolutely and completely is not EVER portrayed that way.

Hillbillies don't only exist in the south. A hillbilly is defined as a typical rural person/person from a small town which includes a huge portion of Americans.

The south also has businesses and colleges so your attempt to declare them as the only hillbillies is utterly false.

reply

Hillbilly originally referred to those from Appalachia/the Appalachian mountains and was a derogatory term that described stereotypes of the behavior of those in the region. They hate the word (especially when it does not describe them), too.

I learned this in elementary school in Kentucky.

If someone called me a word (for example, "stupid") that didn't describe me, I'd be perturbed. They don't like it because people direct that word at them and associate it with stereotypes of their behaviour, even if they act nothing like the typical description of a hillbilly.

I kinda know what you're talking about. I think it's a little something like how I feel about "The Real Princesses of New Jersey" on So Random, or maybe more like how I feel about the show Jersey Shore. And to be totally clear, yes, I was born and raised in NJ. Now, while it isn't true that Bailey is portrayed as a dumb hillbilly—she's actually portrayed as a genius—she's still a bit hickish at times, and even with that, the show does seem to be saying that she's an exception to the (according to you, nonexistent) rule. And, okay, so Bailey comes from a good, honest, hard-working family, but I wouldn't want my family portrayed like hers either.
So I appreciate you starting this thread. We New Jerseyans are a very proud people too, and no New Jerseyan I've ever met fits the stereotype. All New Jerseyans are different, just as I'm sure all people from Kansas are different. And now that I think about it, I wasn't comfortable with all of the Kansas hick jokes either. Thank you for speaking up.

On so random they weren't so much making fun of New Jersey as they were making fun of the real housewives of NJ.

Maybe you should do research as well. The South is not made up of hillbillies and Southerners are also very smart and proud. I was born and raised in Tennessee and in the city. We have running water, electricity, and we even have an education system. Even though Tennessee is known for their country music... did you know that a lot of other types of music originates from the South other than country? Here are a few examples from IMDB:
~Kings of Leon is an American rock band that originated in Albion, Oklahoma but formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 1999.
~Mona is an American rock band from Nashville, Tennessee.
~ Academy Award-winning rap group Three 6 Mafia was formed in Memphis.
Not to mention all of the actors and actresses from Tennessee:
~Kathy Bates
~Samuel L Jackson
~Justin Timberlake (Obviously a famous singer too)
~Shannon Daughtery
~Elvis Presley (Obviously a famous singer too)
~Reese Witherspoon
Among many others
Stereotypes need to go altogether. You are upset about Disney stereotyping Kansas and then you slam the south. The south is also a beautiful place and unappreciated. People from here are kind, intelligent, and have a southern accent. It does not make us hillbillies. Characteristics make you a hillbilly and it doesnt matter if its New York or Alabama.

reply

I didn''t mean to slam the south, honestly I did not. Being from Kansas I get slammed all the time and I should of realized before I talked. However, after seeing more episodes I notice that she is shown as smart, kind, generous, ect but the remarks on Kansas are bad. In one episode she mentions her town is near nothing and they just got 80's slang. In one episode she incorrectly says she is growing corn since its the major export and all people from Kansas know this to be untrue as we grow Wheat. I just wish better research was done.

It's okay. Sometimes when we try to make a point, we do not realize how we are coming across. Especially with the internet, the interpretation is even harder because there is no tone to help.
I know that people are not aware of what is really going on in each state and only have this extreme stereotype that is held on to. Luckily, I travel all over the states for my job and I am able to experience the many different things in each state. We try to do things that they are known for and it has to be what the locals say, not what people who have never been there say. I have been to Kansas and loved it. I have also been to Kansas City, Missouri which of course is right next to Kansas, and I cannot express how much I love the Savoy. I went to Wichita, KS recently and was amazed that the houses were intermingled between rich, middle class, and poor. Beautiful city and I would love to work there again.
