Black guy

Not being rascist but how the hell did he get a part in this?

Yes i understand there were black soldiers during some battles but INDIA?

Come on! Whats this about?

Inaccurate

reply

Oh FFS...the only thing inaccurate is your knowledge of the British Army.

Please, go back and get an education before you embarrass us all!!!

Yeah there could easily been a black fella in the army, but he sure as hell wouldnt have a dodgy cockney accent. There was scene where that fat welsh bastard (couldnt understand a damm word he was saying most of the time) was on about "heathens", with that black fella sat right next to him! Would black soldiers be segregated?

Peril = moving around on horses alot, getting attacked by bandits every so often, referencing the good Sharpe series to try and give it some prestige = CRAP!!!!

OMG!

I give up.....

It was 1818 FFS, how many times must you be told before you get it into your thick heads?

You people are more thick than those stupid yanks.

Anatja i know my history mate

This episode has got it wrong historically

And to call us thick well dont get me started

reply

I'm sorry dear, but I'm afraid you are incorrect. There WERE coloured (black) soldiers serving with the British Army in India in the early 1800s when this episode of 'Sharpe' is set. Of course, as you rightly point out, none of us were around in 1818, however, there are plenty of contemporary records written and illustrated by those who were. In the olden days when I was at school, we were taught History (among other things) - a subject which seemingly doesn't seem to be taught adequately any more, along with English, judging by the grammatically appalling messages placed on this website.

"'Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt"

reply

Anatja, you say "how many times must you be told before you get it into your thick heads?" but you haven't actually said anything.

You shout at people for not knowing history, for embarrassing us all and you act with an ugly arrogance that you are extremely more learned than anyone else, yet I see no proof.

You are right there were black soldiers in the British army in the early 19th century but why don't you explain why instead of being so smug and obnoxious? You are completely unhelpful and seem to only be posting here so you can try and give the impression that you are more intelligent or better in some way than other people.

Anyway...

There were plenty of black people in the British army in the early 18th century and had been for nearly 100 years (you would have spotted the odd one for centuries earlier too). We had already colonised places in Africa and been a major contributor to the Slave trade (which we had abolished and made illegal at the time of this film), meaning that we were ruling countries in the West Indies that had been filled with black slaves and none slaves who would often be used to protect the Aristocracies properties in those areas. Many were drafted into the army, normally, as with Indians and Ghurkas, they were put in their own regiments. That said, The British army was not apartheid. Blacks who were born and bred in Britain were free to enter which ever regiment they wanted and many did.

I hope this website will be interesting to some of you. It discusses the history of black men and women in the British army. Great read!

P.s. Someone above suggested that the black soldier in this film would not speak with the daft cockney accent the actor used. Well, this is true but only because the actor is using a very recent South Eastern accent. People didn't even use that accent 50 years ago, never mind 200 years ago. That soldier most likely would have had a cockney (if he was from a working class London family) accent though and wouldn't have sounded any different than any other soldier from the same area.

I only got round to watching Sharpe's Peril yesterday. Black soldiers were common in the British army from around 1750 to the 1820's, when racial prejudice started creeping in. They were not segregated in those days. That bit I learnt at school studying the napoleonic wars.

Also, confirming the use of black soldiers is this guy's thesis:

reply

coming down a bit harsh on anatja but fair.

just on the accent thing, it is unclear that any of the accents in the film, other than the better-honed aristocratic ones, would be accurate to accents of the time... they might be, they might not, but the english spoken then was not much like the english spoken now.

It's a bit like saying Brian Chapman's accent, syntax & vocabulary are inaccurate in Holy Grail.

Actually, you will find that the East India Company experimented with troops from Madagascar within India, not as slaves but as soldiers (especially guarding key posts and other points) from the 17th century onwards. They were considered more reliable than the Indian soldiers accoridng to some historical sources.

Similiary, the Portuguese, the French, the Dutch and the Spanish all employed the use of black soldiers within their armies during the early colonial period.

So its not just political correctness. It does hold historical fact as well.

Try reading some history book.

Black soldiers may have served in East India Company but would not have been in a regiment with white soldiers.
Black soldiers were still segregated during World War 2 let alone 1818.

No The Toker is from Great Britain. The Toker is not sure what "segregated united" means.
The Toker is more concerned with your anger issues now, perhaps you could provide evidence for your arguement instead of hurling abuse at anyone who disagrees with your point of view? Also seek help from a medical professional perhaps?

Couldn't be bothered to read past The Toker, anyone who uses the 3rd person when referring to themselves needs a good kicking in as far as I am concerned.

How about 'The Toker' pick up a history book based on his country of birth instead of relying upon American war movies for information eh? There's a good boy.

I didn't bother to read any more rants, as I said anyone who refers to themselves in the 3rd person needs a mental health assessment (or perhaps just a girlfriend would do? )

Glad to see Walter Tull mentioned, he is often forgotten and was a native Brit as well...OH NOES, I forgot, black people did not exist before 1950!

Yes, black people were not segregated into all black units at the time, really, especially if they were from teh British isles; yes, there were black people native to Great Britian even then, just in smaller numbers and most were from London, which makes the character acceptable considering he has a London accent.

Also some colonies were settled by Anglo-Africans, such as Sierra Leone which was settled by the "black poor" of London (they were already a common site in London in 1786).

You are slightly wrong here, they were invented in the early 1960s, by the Civil Rights movement![]

Anatja. Is this completely natural for you? Just a part of your character or is there a particular reason you are acting like an idiot?

Is public humiliation some kind of turn on for you?

Well step right up Huskie (ermmm Huzzie), I have time on my hands and PMT so bring it on little boy.

I am not under any obligation by YOU or even IMDb to explain ANYTHING. Some people want to waste their time (or perhaps have less valuable time than I have) copying lots of historical facts, I DON'T.

I put my time in, I did the research and I give it out to people who WANT to know.

Not to the Stormfront rejects who are more interested in whinging about the fact that there is yet another black face on television (some of whom ONLY come out for this particular topic) so if I say that I am FED UP of this particular brand of ignorance after all this time, it is well warranted OK? I don't need your permission to get pissed off.

So does because it makes you feel all big and clever to throw your little bit of Wiki-military knowledge about the place, don't annoy those of us who have been doing this FAR longer than you and have had to deal with far worse.

Now DON'T bother me again.

[Edited to add]

Awww bless, half wit Toker boy now has a BIG boy to stand up for him so now he is feeling brave......

Er, Eighth-Samurai...I hate to be a pain but where are you getting your facts from? After studying the British Army in this period for three years as an undergraduate I have never come across individual black soldiers serving in companines of white guys - they did use black guys as local milita in the Indies...but as far as im aware they did not have single black guys serving in companies. All black regiments were not organised properly until later in the 19th century. Maybe there were exceptional cases of black guys winding up in line regiments...but because of martial race theories etc. they tended to keep white guys in white regiments, indians in sepoy regiments etc.

Here's to the Burgundy Lido!

Bovril, when did you do your degree? 1954?

It seems hardly fair to describe the group to which this soldier was attached as a regiment, the remnants of one, perhaps, but with what appears to be not more than 5 talking non-Indian members & fewer than 10 others, it seems a bit presumptuous to suppose that our chap was the only one in the regiment, doesn't it?

reply

Taken from an extract from a passage regarding Walter Tull - "According to The Manual of Military Law, Black soldiers of any rank were not desirable. During the First World War, military chiefs of staff, with government approval, argued that White soldiers would not accept orders issued by men of colour and on no account should Black soldiers serve on the front line."

Oh and The Toker refers to himself in the 3rd person because he has the freedom to refer to himself however he wishes. Perhaps you don't have those rights in your country - The Toker believes you should get rid of Mr Mugabe.
