How does this version end?

I am always hoping to find a Wurthering Heights that has the ending from the book, and have yet to do so. So could someone please tell me how this one ends?

reply

It ends shortly after Cathy's death. We see Hareton as a feral youth, but the second generation is largely cut.

Ah, I see. Well thank you :-). I appreciate the reply. I'm disappointed but not really surprised. It would probably take a miniseries for them to want to include the book’s ending. As far as I'm aware none of the versions that have been made so far, have the second generation ending.

But again, thanks.

The 1992 adaptation with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche does include the second generation! Well, of course it had to be quite different from the book, but it is a very good effort to try and tell the whole story and I personally like it very much. : )

reply

Oh really? Does it have the second generation ending up together?

Because if so I'm going to order that right away!

reply

Yes it does! And it is overall a film worth having in your collection! : )

Whoo! Thank you so much for letting me know about that version! I *really* appreciate it! I love the story of Wurthing Heights but I only really enjoy the sadness of Heathcliff and Kathy if I know the second generation can end up together so I've never really been able to enjoy the film versions I've seen, (plus none of the makeshift endings have ever felt really right).

Jane Eyre and Wurtherign Heigths are the two stories I am always trying to find a good movie version of. I'm finally pretty happy with Jane Eyre, but had about given up on Wurthing Heigths so thanks!

Off to Amazon.com now, again, thanks so much!

Glad I helped : )

There are quite a few adaptations of WH that include the second generation. The 1992 one starring Ralph Feinnes, the 2009 version starring Tom Hardy, the 1978 version starring Ken Hutchinson and the 1967 version starring Ian Mcshane. All of which are available on dvd.

There's a Masterpiece Classic version on Netflix Instant that includes the next generation and Cathy II/Hareton ending up together. It was done in 2009 and stars Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley.

There is also the 1998 T.V [BBC maybe?] version everyone seems to ignore starring Orla Brady and Robert Cavanah. It's well done but hard to look at because the two leads are so very very old [also Orla Brady's big yellow smokers teeth are really hard to ignore] however the second generation cast is terrific; Matthew McFadden [M.r Darcy 2005] is Hareton, and Sarah Smart is Catherine. Sarah Smart also played Carol, the Female Heathcliff, in Sparkhouse.
