Masterpiece.

I hope Andrea Arnold will continue making films on this level. I'm in my early 30's and never seen a film produced during my life span shot, edited and recorded this beautiful. It amazes me every time I see this film. It's equal to some of the best of Tarkovsky's works in my book and it doesn't even try to recapture that like Trier's Antichrist - it stands on it's own. Brontë would be fond of this.

I mentioned in another post, that i think the first half of "Wuthering Heights" is in fact, brilliant. Of all the filmed versions of this story, this one explores the childhood years of Kathy and Heathcliff the best, by far. The casting of Solomon Graves was brilliant, and Shannon Beer was likewise ideal to play young Kathy. But i did not enjoy the second half at all. Where was the revenge, and the anger of the book? Why was Heathcliff little more than a sad little boy in a man's body? I thought James Howson was terribly miscast, both in looks and acting ability. Where did that afro come from? He looked nothing like the younger Heathcliff; they don't even look like they are the same ethnicity. And the older Kathy, was very bland as well. Please check out the BBC production starring Tom Hardy. It might not be as pretty, or as artistic as this version, but it succeeds in telling the real story as it was written by Bronte. and Tom Hardy plays heathcliff as he really was in the novel.

First off, I won't disagree with your view as a whole. Especially when you mention the second half compared to the novel. Though I didn't have that much a problem with it. Personally, if a film is based on a novel, in most cases I'm more interested when a film maker is able to capture the atmosphere / essence / what lies between the lines of a book than deleivering a transcript of what's exactly going on in the book. With Wuthering Heights (film), in my opinion the focus was much more about the isolation of the landscape...It's beatuiful and depressing at the same time. I'd argue they've taken some liberties while concepting their characters and thus leading to a different conclusion. It was more about Heathcliff driven made by love and being crushed by it, than an epic Monte Christo revenge-story.

I'll check out the BBC production, thanks for your recommandation.

I just re-watched this version of "Wuthering Heights." And you were right; it is a masterpiece. I just didn't "get it" the first time around..this version uses the landscape, rather than words to tell the story. It is brilliant on many levels..
