Starting Over

I first learned about this show about a month and a half ago from a full page ad in TV Guide (U.S.). Thus, I've been watching season 1, two episodes per week, from the pilot. Tonight, ION, the channel that carries it here, just skipped the last two episodes of season one, airing S2 E1 directly after S1 E11. In the latter episode, reference is made to "losing Charlie," but the episode descriptions for the last two episodes of S1 make no reference to that in the plot lines.

Did they actually kill off the character at the end of season one, or did they just give Lisa Marcos the old heave-ho between seasons when a higher profile actress (Lauren Lee Smith) became available, with no real explanation of Charlie's demise within the series?

apparently there are 2 episodes of season 1 that we're not 'allowed to see' lol

Season 1 E12 and E13... My guess is that one/both of them deal with an Arch villain we never meet again, and or set up back story about Toby's gift/Mother (or so I gleamed from the board here)...

I'm guessing ION opted to skip them as the general contribution to the series is these never to be seen arcs, and as such they skipped them entirely...

a casual Viewer who doesn't visit the board would only really miss the fact that Charlie was killed, and the throwaway line about her death in S02E01 could easily be a reference to off screen events between the seasons... they wouldn't be the first show to kill some off between the seasons

Thanks for your comments. Just checking, I see that season 1 is available on Amazon.com (in Region 2 format), but it doesn't list the episodes that are included. It's apparently watchable online, but I can't verify the legitimacy of such sites. From this Spanish site (one of several), it appears to have aired on FX before the current run on ION. http://www.videoweed.es/file/3687beaee7e94

In summary, besides having Charlie in the hospital in questionable condition, season 1 also ended in a cliffhanger that they apparently chose not to resolve. Season 2 opens instead with a rebooting of the paramedic-cop relationship, with a whole new cop character and actress.

Given the situation with how season one ended and its cliffhanger unresolved, it's understandable why ION would have chosen to skip the last two episodes featuring Pinsent's character and his story line. Otherwise, they could have dropped only the final episode, but achieved the same effect, i.e., viewer questions about "what happened to Charlie," instead of both "what happened to Charlie" and "what happened to Toby's mom," in addition.

What?

She was still alive at the end of season 1, just asleep in the hospitcal.

they expected her to recover.

but they killed her off in favor of the generic detective drama they were going for.

I just watched the next-to-last episode of season 1 at the link in my previous post. There's no threat or apparent danger to Charlie in the episode, and the case is apparently resolved. Any continuation into the final episode, it would appear, would be with guest star, Gordon Pinsent's character, whom I haven't seen on screen since Due South.

Later: I just watched the final episode of season 1. Yes, Charlie gets shot in this episode. When we last see her, she's out of surgery and in critical, but stable, condition. It short, she indeed disappears over the season hiatus, not during the season itself.

I was womndering, from the time I first watched 1x13, how can you be CRITICAL but STABLE? :D It makes no sense what so ever lol

reply

Critical means life threatening. Stable is whether a condition is improving or degrading. Critical but stable is standard medical jargon.

I also have been watching on ION and my biggest problem is that Toby evidently tells the good Dr. Liz that he can read minds, that's pretty huge to skip over. How did this happen?

reply

I watch everything online, on different sites. So can you. You don't have to skip anything
