Why did Howard shave beard just after killing someone ?

Why Howard has shaved his beard just after killing Emmet when we see his body still in acid later. What is so hurry or care to shave at that time, he could have done it any time early before killing happened or later any time. Who goes to shave after killing someone? What's director was implying with this?

Did you notice Howard was dressed casually / dump throughout the movie. Once Emmett was killed, Howard (in his delusional state of mind) saw that as an opportunity to try and woo Michelle. So he shaves, combs his hair, puts on khakis and a polo (which he tucks in). In his mind he went from being friend / savior / father figure to the Emmett and Michelle, to now being the father / possible love interest. So he decided to dress better - as though that would help! That was my take on why he shaved and dressed better.

a good theory .
My theory I think he still might think of her as his daughter because he talks about how his daughter used to eat ice cream from the bowl and he gives her the bowl.

i don't think there needs to be an exact explanation for the shave. Maybe he was just in the mood for a shave after cleaning everything up.

reply

Maybe he was shooting two movies at the same time
and for one of the movies he didn't need a beard.

I was really hoping for a graphic love scene then...Mary Elizabeth is fine as silk and it would have added a ton of depth to her character

reply

It's PG 13.You can't have a graphic love scene with that
rating.

Really? You need to see a woman be raped in order for her to have more depth of character? Ugh. I'm at a loss for words.

reply

maybe he just wanted a shave. people do shave

reply

Yes, people need a shave. But they were underground for months and we never saw him shave. The movie established that the character didn't shave, and that he dressed kind of slovenly. As soon as it was just him and Michelle, he was clean-shaven and dressed neatly, two things that we'd never seen before.

Movies are made to show us specific things. If we're only shown one thing, that's the thing that is. When that thing changes, there is a reason for it.

he probably felt good about killing Emmet

it was a new beginning for him. he was totally in charge, felt younger and rejuvenated

the shave may have symbolised those feelings. he felt like a new man

reply

Agreed.

Despite the things that indicated that he was more interested in Michelle as a father figure (such as him referring to her as a "girl" and a "princess" during the word game), the shaving thing gave me the creeps and felt like a shift into more predatory territory.

To me, growing a beard is more of a dad thing, not shaving and getting more dressed up. There's also his line, something like "Now it's just you and me, just like it was always meant to be."

I also think that it shows his skewed emotional reaction to the killing of Emmett: he isn't sad or full of regret. He isn't broken up over it. He sees it as a relief and an opportunity. Like another poster said in this thread: he feels good about it.

reply

Yup. He was a bad man. He did bad things. Michelle killed him, and it was good.

reply

I believe he did it because of a mix of two things..

1. in some place of his mind he was afraid that this act of violence could have scared Michelle, so he tried to create a good scene where she would feel good, then the ice cream and shaving, better clothes, etc...

2. at the same time, it was a new beggining, as he stated. no more Emmet, jus the both of them, father and daughter... no intruder trying do take his princess away from him.

There's 2 guesses I made when watching that scene.

1) He's trying to get giggy with Michelle (I mean who wouldn't?) and trying to impress her any way he can. That means shaving and coming his hair to look attractive now that there's no one there to stop him.

2) He's still treating her like his daughter. He probably was beardless when taking care of her and is trying to re-enact it again with Michelle.

i wonder if he shaved his pubes

It also bother me at that time. If I remember correctly, when we saw the photograph of Howard and the little girl, he's clean shaven.

So, it's either Howard is like a father-daughter type, or just has a liking to 'little girl'. It also bothers me when the three of them playing guessing the word. Howard comstanty saying things like little girl and little princess. It's like a pedo bear thoughts, don't you think?

reply

I thought he just got dirty with the blood and the acid. It's easier to just get rid of the clothes and beard.
