Am I the only person who thought this wasn't scary at all?

I honestly do not understand the accolades for this movie. I grew up on horror movies, its my favorite genre. Though I am a fan of the paranormal plot, I just don't understand why people thought this was a scary film. Is it because of the realistic feel of the movie, because it is recorded on handheld camera? The most action happened in the last few minutes of the movie.

Totally agree with YOU!! I have seen many, MANY horror flicks, from youth to and still now. I'll probably die watching one. Lol. I enjoy them because it IS a BREAK from the everyday monotony of 'typical' T.V. ESPECIALLY today's stuff. As for THESE films?? Not that scarie, more irrating than anything else. And, like you said, most of the activity was during the last few moments of filming these.

Each person has a different concept of what's scary, so different types of movie work for different people.

I myself have seen a lot of horror films and some of the most messed up ones. Heck, I even sat through Salo and never looked away from the screen. But I did find PA to be terrifying because it played with my mind, and it was a slow-burn tension that was built to its climax. It was a very effective horror film to me because it's all inside my head. I don't need a lot of blood and guts to enjoy a good scare, because I have a vivid imagination.

To each his/her own, really.

Did we watch a different film? I found this film so overtly fake. The scene were the Ouija board went nuts and caught fire. If it had moved an inch that have been 'Did that move?' that I would find somewhat scary but flying about like a scene from Ghostbusters just isn't subtle at all.

Yes you watched a different film. You watched Steven Spielberg's version from 2009 with a different ending, a version that was created to cash in on people who easily buy hypes.

I watched an indie film from 2007.

Quick question...

What was different from the original and what was widely released. I know Spielberg got to Peli and he changed some of the film, just not sure what... Fill me in, im a fan of this film and would like to know how much was altered...

reply

Almost positive he just changed the ending.

It's too over done and obvious to be taken seriously. I really wanted to enjoy this but it was so forced. At the end I just found it annoying.

If you can't scare me at least entertain me. This did neither.

Agreed.

I found this movie to be really scary. Esp the fist time I watched it alone in a movie theatre. I loved that it was all what you heard and very little is seen. Today everything is shown this left everything to your imagination which is better. You have no idea what the thing is that is terrorizing them. I loved that about this movie. And also how its just a person taping things happening in their house. Best idea ever for a horror movie. I would say I loved the second one more but this one was really good!

Game Over!

I can see where you are coming from.

"Esp the fist time I watched it alone in a movie theatre." You were all alone in a movie theater?

I think it doesn't help that the characters didn't feel like real people to me. Generally you are pulled into a film through empathising with the characters. If the motivations are unclear, it's hard to invest in their fears and concerns.

What was going on with that guy? He doesn't seem sure whether he's a sceptic or a believer. He thinks that he's helping by putting powder around the place, but yet he thinks it's a real demon. How does he think knowing where the demon is walking is going to help? Surely the benefit of the powder would be if you could work out how an intruder was entering the house?

The Blair Witch Project had more compelling characters who had clearer motivations and were easier to empathise with - and that still wasn't great.

OP, I agree with you, I can't figure out how and why people find this movie scary.

It wasn't scary for me either. Of course I have had my share of paranormal experiences so maybe I've grown numb to it all.

reply

I don't get it either. This did not scare me at all.

Not scary at all and I still don't understand how it made so much money. Did people think it was real or what? After watching this movie, I pinched myself to make sure I had actually watched the film because I just did not get the hype.

reply

The level of scariness has nothing to do with why it made so much money. You were curious to see it, right? Because you heard it was scary? (I'll just assume that you've seen it because you were interested to see it). I mean, don't you think other people wanted to too? It made money because wanted to see it, not because it was scary.

reply

No, you're not the only one.

Ghost movies just don't scare me. I was laughing (inside) the entire movie of Paranormal. I'm getting tired of all these ghost/paranormal movies in the horror genre these days.

I'd rather get some good creature features. The Thing, Jaws, Alien, Cujo, Arachnophobia... those are real scares. That or just completely F'd up concepts like Deliverance or Silence of the Lambs. Those to me are scary or good thrillers.

The only 'paranormal' movie that really did anything for me was Poltergeist. Somehow that film just got it right. Also helped that I saw it at a VERY young age.

It's only scary to weak minded people
