Does the movie explain why Solidad had a Timer?

Her parents are against it. The Thanksgiving scene makes that perfectly clear, but she has one.

Do any other scenes in the movie explain this?

reply

The thanksgiving scene doesn't make it clear, they were I'm assuming were hoping for it to be a boy from their neighbourhood not the mothers bosses son...

So Soledad has a timer and it goes off today. Her family and friends arrange a party for her with a bunch of local boys of latin descent. Are their timers also expiring on the same day? Did anybody think to look at their timers ? If so they would have realized that a rapid expiration in teh case of a juvenile is rare.

The only explanation they have a platoon of young boys waiting for her is that they are all getting their timers installed during the party. Maybe they are getting a group rate.

The party had nothing to do with her or anyone else's timer. It was her QuinceaƱera.

I wasn't aware of the existence of such a tradition. Still i was confused about the mother of the boys response when she said something along the lines "that's a moot point now" after the party was mentioned suggesting the party had something to do with the Timer in that you have a large event on the same day the timer happens to zero out.

reply

The mother was ignorant about the housekeeper's culture throughout the movie so she didn't know about the purpose of the party either, which is why she commented that the party was now unnecessary--it was just her own misunderstanding and rudeness.

That girl was not having her quincinera...that could've been easily explained by her parents. You dont invite ONLY BOYS to a 15 year old girls quincinera. Her parents wanted to play matchmaker with her.

Yeah i found the mention of "boys" very bizarre and implying there was some interest in finding her a mate or controlling the outcome and maintaining cultural solidarity through arranged or psuedo-arranged dating.

I can't remember teh exact dialogue now but i do remember the "local boys" statement. I'll have to wait to watch that again.

reply

It might have been Soledad's QuinceaƱera, but that still does not explain why she mentioned the "local boys." That comment must have been related to the timer, and even Oona's mother says "isn't that a moot point?", suggesting that the party was indeed about matching Soledad with a mate.
