Question about Lea and Cheri

Did anyone get the feeling that Cheri's mother set Lea and Cheri's relationship up? If so, why did she do that?

On a side-note, I didn't think this was such a bad movie and that Michelle's acting was appalling (although that 'desperate' cry of 'Cheriiii!' was very fake and overdramatic). It was wonderful how the movie seemed to emphasise the impermanent nature of lust and how wonderful it would be if people put love above sex in romantic relationships.
