Decline of audience' standards?

So I happened to watch two movies back to back yesterday, two movies I hadn't seen before: First I watched "From Paris With Love", then "The One". The former was a mindless and latent racist action flick (or, from a non-US-perspective, it was mostly a mindless jerk-off-file for americans). It had some good action scenes but the rest was hard to watch. The One wasn't a masterpiece either but still way better and didn't have any pretentious overtones. Then, as usual, I went to IMDb to cast my votes on these two movies and to look up the comments. And I was shocked to see that From Paris With Love was rated 6.4 while The One is rated as low as 5.6 ... and that's a HUGE difference since everything above 6 is a still a solid movie while anything below is bordering trash!

I know that the theme from The One isn't anyones's cup of tea but I thought the stupidity of FPWL wouldn't be either. Reading the FPWL boards I realized that many watchers *do* realize the flaws of the movie but just shrug it off "hey, it's still entertaining, so what". While The One isn't exactly on old movie it isn't exactly new either, so my theory is that today's audience has numbed (or dumbed) down yet another notch since 2001. Producers seem to be able to get away with almost anything these days as long as the movie contains some entertaining elements. And I think it won't take long (probably another 10 years) until all those awful elements have become standard and "entertaining" as well ...

Anyone here that has seen both movies? I'd like to read your comment on this topic, whether you agree or not.

Totally agreed. I cannot say that The One is the best sci-fi flick ever but it has an engaging storyline and keeps you at the edge for most parts. Compared to this crap with pretty title and imitation of every other action film. 10 minutes in, you can guess what's gonna happen on every scene. A ten year old can come up with more creative plot without a senior embassy staff carrying a vase around Paris. I mean even the title is not original.

the one sucked. this move made some attempt at bending the gnre, the one was utter cliche filled boredom. jet li has no charisma.

Put up or shut up.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

Your equating an IMDB rating with audience standards which isn't really fair. People are quite capable of getting different things from different movies. I've seen plenty of high brow movies I'd give a lower rating than this and vica versa.

Sure, but the IMDb rating is an average of thousands of people - people that care enough about movies that they take their time to rate it here (which requires an account and all). And my main point wasn't the rating, it's the fact that people DO acknowledge the flaws of this movie but shrug it off ...
... see, most threads here aren't exactly positive and if they are, they still include things like "even though it is stupid"!

Okay, maybe this movie is actually one of the rare cases that manages to greatly entertain through it's stupidity, but I doubt that. Not only because it didn't work for me but also because this applies for most movies that are made these days.

Sadly, I didn't get many replies here. I also posted the same message in The one forum and got zilch replies ...
