China's Medal Count

Will this be the only Olympics where China has this great of performance in the medal count?

reply

It'll only be great if they get 100 total medals.

They are guarantee 99 so far because three chinese boxers enter the final (96 current medals + 3 possible medals)... now it's up to the chinese rhythmic gymnastics team to get the last 100th medal for China.

Then, it'll be a great performance.

But to answer your question, yes?

Ya but they need to be stripped of their "women's" gymnastics medals...
haha

It really depend with your definition of great performance.
By statistic, there is a lot factor that make China perform better in the future olympic. However, if we look statistic, most nation perform best when they hosted the event, so my answer there is not enough reason to believe that now is peak performance of China in olympics.

It's pretty typical for the host country to get more than their usual number of medals. They have the home crowd behind them.

In fact, only one country has ever failed to win a gold medal in a Summer Games it hosted -- Canada in 1976.

I'm pretty sure China will also do well in London 2012. Probably still 1 of the main challengers to the US. Unless of course GB cause a major upset & be at the top of the medals table cuz coincidently they're the host of the Olympics.

Celebrating somebody's birthday is like reminding the mothers the pain they'd rather forget.

I don't doubt that at all. Their overall medal count, though, is certain to drop, just like Greece (16 in 2004 and 4 in 2008), Australia (58 in 2000 and 39 in 2004), United States (101 in 1996 and 91 in 2000), Spain (22 in 1992 and 17 in 1996) and so on and so on.

I would expect USA to be on the top, followed closely by China and GB to be #4, maybe #3. They had 47 medals with 19 golds this year, and I would expect that to jump to about 58/23 in 2012, if history is any indication.

I can't follow your logic here
Except for the relay races, track 'n field, swimming, and the decathlon aren't team sports, so attributing Chinas lack of success in those events to China being no good at team sports is baffling.
Softball and baseball aren't considered a "big one" anywhere in the world outside North America and Japan, and in fact both have been dropped from the next Olympics, so it's unlikely China put much effort into improving their performance in those events.
I'd expect China to concentrate on track and field events over the next 4 years, cos that seems to be their major weak spot.

yes.. I also think, China not very good in team sport, but they pretty good at women volleyball. This time they only get bronze, but occasionally get gold medals in previous olympics.

reply

So will you lose your attraction for them when their medals are stripped?
