It really pains me but....

....I could only give this film a 5/10.

I have read the book several times, such is its charm and interesting thread as Bryson wends his way up the trail.

This film however I will never watch again. The budget of $8m was telling, so it just seemed to cash-in on the popularity of Bryson's writing. It didn't have to be big budget of course, but they sure could have done a better job. And Redford should stay out of comedies (or delivering comedic lines) as he just isn't a very funny person. Totally miscast here. Also, whilst Nolte was the better 'lead' he did mumble a lot, especially when he was lying prostrate on that ledge and delivering a monologue. I didn't catch a word.

Ah well, 'tis a pity. Poor screenplay (given the rich material) and poor casting shafted this film of great potential from the start.
