Loved the Film, But RR Looked Uncomfortable Doing Comedy

Plus, he wasn't that good at it. Nolte on the other hand, was GREAT.

reply

Agreed, I don't think RR is comfortable doing comedy.

Nolte was hilarious.

Did you ever see Barefoot in the Park? Redford is perfect in that fabulous comedy!

reply

That was half a century ago!

reply

Redford is the straight man playing against Nolte's shenanigans.

reply

This, spot on

I am now a checkerboard chick!

reply

Robert Redford is more of a traumatic actor.

Redford is the straight man playing against Nolte's shenanigans.

Exactly; Redford isn't supposed to be the overtly funny guy.

Totally agree. Nolte is great in this but Redford looks uneasy the entire time.

He's playing a character who is not comfortable talking to people, that's all.

Right - Redford was the straight guy - and I thought Nolte was adorable and hilarious.

Altho - I do think the Bryson character was overly introverted. Redford didn't give the character any personality at all . . .

Maybe the unsaid message was that Bryson had wanted to do this entirely alone and therefore had no desire to carry on any conversation.
Other than random nature facts, he never initiated any conversation or commented much in replies - dull personality.

I wonder of the real writer, Bryson is like that?

There are interviews on youtube (here's one example:

) that sound like once you get him talking he keeps going. He almost seems more like Nolte's character in that respect.

are you suggesting this is some kind of comedy? this reminds me of a line in 'my favorite year'. king kaiser walks into the room with the script and says 'who wrote this *beep* redford is too old for this story and nolte is too decrepit.

reply

I thought Redford should have done this film 10 years ago. He wasn't that bad, but Nick did steal the show. Nice little film; the scenery was beautiful.

reply

Different perspective on Redford. Not only did he have all the pithy zingers, but he did a fine job delivering them. The high point of this fun but lightweight and disappointing film was discovering that Redford had a credible comedic side. I thought it was Nolte who had to struggle against the one-dimensional raffish wastrel, not always successfully.
