Wallander could not possibly be more boring

I read the first book in the series and couldn't stand Wallander. He is so devoid of personality and life. It's as if Mankell is smugly looking down on American police dramas with their obsession with aggressive cops whose zeal for justice makes them break all the rules of law enforcement by making Wallander an impotent civil servant who walks and talks like he needs testosterone supplements. I have to say, the British TV adaptation was very loyal to the books in that way. I feel the need to slap Branagh in the face to wake him up. I wish they would make a show based on Jo Nesbo's novels. They are 1000 times better than anything else coming out of Scandinavia in that genre.

Couldn't agree more. Brannagh should have rolled over to make room for Hiddleston. Sub-par. The PBS-UK channel is showing all shows again. That's why the late post.

Finally started to watch it from the first season (on Netflix). Have given up after 3 episodes. Kenneth Branagh is, of course, a great actor - his portrayal of Reinhard Heydrich in The Conference is as chilling as it gets; but his Wallander is too overwrought, too emotional and seems to suck all the life out of both the other characters and the story. Someone suggested a Jo Nesbo series, that could be a good move. I do like slow paced mystery stories but Wallander focuses too much on the character rather than the plot and it was hard for me to maintain enthusiasm for it.

He's pretty flat, isn't he? Unless he's angry or frightened, he's kind of a dry sponge.
