Pancks - book/series? (spoilers)

I kind of like the character Pancks in the series, especially when he found out about Mr. Dorrit's fortune. Is he much different in the book than he is portrayed in the series?

reply

I think the way Pancks is portrayed is generally in keeping with the book's treatment of him.

reply

I second this, only to read Dickens' descriptions of Panck's antics instead of just watching them oftentimes proves more hysterical.

Also, the altercation with Mr. Casby at the end is portrayed to a much greater extent in the book and makes Pancks the hero more definitely among the Bleeding Hearts than the series did.

reply

I remember Pancks being described oftens as a like a train steaming in and out of a scene quickly. So, yeah, basically.

"You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."

SPOILER (I guess). . .

This may sound trivial, because it does not relate to the acting, but to the physical appearance of Mr. Pancks. In the book, much is made of his eccentric hairstyle. In this film version, he is bald, and it bugs me greatly !

reply

How odd! I just finished the book, and I don't recall any mention of his hair.....

reply

Oh, the hair is definitely mentioned. I found the ending of the TV series so muddled that I went and read the last three chapters of the book, just to understand what had happened, and Mr. Pancks' hair is mentioned a couple of times, and in a way that indicates it must have been mentioned before. There appears to be a lot of hair, and when he was excited, Mr. Pancks would push it so that the hair would stand straight up.

While his acting was fine, he was so...physically unattractive...that I found his character almost unwatchable. I mean, they don't have to be gorgeous; not everyone in the cast was. Perhaps his character's personality added to it?
