Rigauds assumed name

when Rigaud shows up in that tavern in France (?) the other patrons ask his name, and he tells them it's "Laney" (sp?) i gather the way he was saying it kinda freaked them out, but I wonder if there was something else to the name I didn't catch, like maybe it has a meaning.
any thoughts?

Rigaud uses several alias names in order to hide his criminal background. The name that he used in the tavern was Lagnier. I am not sure if the name has any connotation to it. I thought that the people in the tavern were more freaked out by his expression when he said it rather than the name itself.
