Similarities to other movies (esp. Tampopo)

I caught this movie on Air India flying from Delhi to JFK at the end of January. I LOVED it but unfortunately we landed before the film finished, I cannot wait until it's release on DVD!

It obviously references a bunch of other films/genres - anyone want to offer specific movies with similarities??

My first reaction was that it reminded me of the 1985 Japanese film "Tampopo" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092048/):
The heroes of Tampopo are named "Goro" & "Gun" which sounds a lot like "Murugun". . . especially after correcting for Japanese/Hindi accents. The plots are also similar, they both focus around a food-related quest. Murugun is trying to stop Rice Plate Reddy from creating the perfect dosa; Goro & Gun are trying to help Tampopo create the perfect ramen (& ramen & dosas are both pretty basic & quintessential meals for their respective cultures.)

I wonder if the resemblance was intentional on the part of the creaters of Quick Gun Murugun??
I don't know the story behind the TV spot or much about the film in general (I didn't even see the whole thing :( ), does anyone know more?

In any case, if you enjoyed "Quick Gun Murugun" I'd highly reccommend seeingn "Tampopo," its a much more serious film, yet it doesn't take itself too seriously (the ongoing joke/metaphor is that food = sex; its really thought out). I guess its classier and not so outlandish, but just as hilarious.
